Downtown at Sundown: The Concert Series That Transformed Lake Charles Downtown
Downtown at Sundown
One of my fondest memories as an event planner dates to 2010, when I worked for the Arts Council of SWLA under Matt Young. It was a sweltering May, and our team had just completed the first week staging the four-week outdoor concert series, Downtown at Sundown, for the City of Lake Charles. As crowds dispersed around 10 p.m. and gear was cleared, Matt and I marveled at the scene. Unbeknownst to us, this event sparked a cultural shift, ushering in ongoing downtown activities that have made it a vibrant hotspot in Southwest Louisiana.

Matt Young now serves as Cultural Affairs Director for the City of Lake Charles, with 2019 marking his first season leading Downtown at Sundown. This annual series draws thousands to downtown's core, boosting businesses, restaurants, bars, and coffee shops while growing in ambition and innovation each year.
More than music, Downtown at Sundown enriches the cultural fabric. It hosts a expansive art market supporting local creators, donates all beverage sales to the Literacy Council of SWLA, features food trucks, and spotlights Lake Charles traditions with added local acts.

The 2019 season, kicking off May 17, introduces multicultural dance. On May 24, Jay and Maria Cotto lead Latin dance lessons; on May 31, Southeast Texas Ballet Folklorico performs traditional Mexican folklore dances to preserve and educate on their heritage.
Embracing a street festival vibe on Ryan Street's 1000 block—between Calcasieu Parish Courthouse and Historic 1911 City Hall Arts & Cultural Center—string lights will drape City Hall's facade, forming a stunning canopy over the plaza.

The 2019 lineup blends blues, folk, Cajun, and party rock: May 17 features Calcasieu Cajun Ramblers with opener Brandon Broussard and Chez De Bon Temps; May 24 brings Terrance Simien and the Zydeco Experience; May 31 has Bluesiana RED with Young Band Nation; June 7 closes with The Tugboats and intermission by Mickey Smith.
Free admission courtesy of community partners. Bring chairs, dance under the lights, and immerse in Lake Charles culture. Like that 2010 night, you'll be awed by downtown's evolution.
