The Capitol Riverfront is the place to be for Nationals games and picnics on summer days. It’s also where you can get some of the best food in DC. From the late 19th century through World War II, the riverside blocks south of the U.S. Capitol were home to the industrial Washington Navy Yard, an area that has been reborn as a haven for sports fans, nature lovers and foodies. It’

Politicos, young staffers and tourists alike head to the neighborhood both for its government buildings like the U.S. Capit

Dive in to the tradition of Anacostia. Even though it's one of DC’s oldest neighborhoods, there’s still something new to discover at every turn. As one of America’s most unique cities, Washington, DC seamlessly offers a full range of international, national and local cultural experiences. Explorers interested in learning about some of the local African American history
Adams Morgan is much more than a neighborhood with a crowded nightlife scene. You’ll find historic row houses around 18th Street, as well as a variety of independently owned stores. The popular vintage clothing store Meeps has a loyal following. There you’ll see fun, trendy looks that are actually affordable. Men might hit the jackpot at Commonwealth, finding apparel, footwear
I head for Bnei Brak, a town which is never on the tourist trail. Here, in the ultra-orthodox outskirts of open-minded Tel Aviv, bearded men in black coats walk side by side with their long-skirted wives, their heads shaven for the sake of modesty, covered with an assortment of wigs and scarves. The Haredi (literally ‘those who tremble in awe of God’) are the most conservative of Jews – their insular lives revolve almost exclusively around Torah study, prayer and family. It’s a surprise to
Here, we work in conditions where long hikes, endless boat rides through remote fjord systems, weeks of camping out, and getting along with a rough Arctic climate is all part of the package. These are also the conditions I work under in my everyday life as a destination and location manager, and photographer. Quite a fun job to be honest – particularly as we are rewarded with stunning landscapes, northern lights and spectacular ice caps. In late 2010 we started a project to share our remote
Lukasz: Yeah, well I basically spent the whole winter away shooting assignments, a mixture of three or four different projects. The main one was the Ice Climbing World Cups which I have been doing now for the past fours years. That usually takes me to South Korea, Switzerland, France, Russia and Romania over a two months period. On top of that I have had other assignments: I’ve been shooting skiing in Chamonix; I also got back from a trip out to the Alps with Ni
I remember vividly looking down at the overhanging top pitches of the Long Hope Route thinking to myself ‘Shit!’ and being genuinely scared and excited at the same time… I usually have no problems with exposure, but here the 1200ft of air really hits your senses hard. Looking from the mainland the St John’s Head appears banana shaped, an overhanging headwall curves over the grassy bottom half of the cliff which slopes down towards the boulders and the sea. Before heading out to St John’s Head
DAY ONE: LONDON – DHAKA 18 hours door to door. Bangladeshi immigration officials are as friendly as meet-and-greet travel reps. I exit the airport to a wall of noise with energy crackling through the air like a thunderstorm is about to hit. The reality is a national strike with demos, riot police and 3 people already dead. I hook up with my local fixers and can tell that organising this shoot is going to be as easy as herding cats on crack. DAY TWO: DHAKA My wake
I have been freediving for nearly eight years now and compete in competitions across the globe. Put simply, freediving is holding your breath in an aquatic environment, but it is far more than that. Freediving gives you the chance to explore the ocean in a unique way – having no equipment gives you the ultimate freedom in the water. We live on the small tropical island of Koh Tao in Thailand, however we spend much of the year travelling, freediving and exploring
The Anxiety State Crisis Cave (Tham Wiung Fah) is a massive cavern, more than 70m deep, inside the limestone formation that makes up Crazy Horse Buttress. This is, without question, the most incredible climb I’ve ever done. Anxiety State Crisis takes a line up the featured pillar in the center of the cave. Alternatively, for those looking to go down, just left of the climb’s start is a hole leading even explorers even deeper. Check out www.thailandclimbing.co
A paraglider in front of the Dolomiti di Brento, above the small Italian city of Pinzolo. The Dolomites are one of the best and most beautiful places to fly in Europe. This shot was taken flying tandem with a local pilot, while shooting an adventure sports video for the Trentino Tourist Office.
A team of athletes, led by Marco Tamponi mountain guide, as seen during the traverse of Glacier Blanche around Aosta Valley, Italy. This traverse was part of a four day adventure in the foothills of Mont Blanc.
We boarded a Twin Otter airplane and ascended towards the valleys and clefts of the Mustang district. I watched the shadow of our plane – worryingly sharp and close to life-sized – flicker over rocks, lines of prayer flags and straggling walls made of rough, round boulders. The Lower Mustang Valley was a landscape of windswept, naked rock and barren gravel. Grey, black and utterly white mountains rose beyond. Descending into the lower valley, more vegetation began to flourish, leaves so thic
I reached for my biggest atlas. And there it was -Muckle Flugga- farther north than St Petersburg or Helsinki, a tiny island off the north coast of Uist, the most northerly of the main Shetland Islands. It was over 100 miles north of John O’Groats which was my previous benchmark for extreme northerliness in the UK. The very top of my country. Not only had I never heard of it, I had never BEEN there. I began planning… We loaded our folding boat onto our folding bicycles. I have little tolera
The Last Great Climb from Alastair Lee is an epic to end all mountain epics set in the stunning mountains of Queen Maud Land, Antarctica. The feature documentary follows top adventure climber Leo Houlding with his tried and tested team of Jason Pickles and Sean ‘Stanley’ Leary as they attempt to make the first ascent of the NE ridge of ‘the master piece of the range’; the majestic Ulvetanna Peak (2931m). One of the most technically demanding climbs in one of the
Greenland is a country divided by the ice, with the west and east being both linguistically and historically very different. By far the majority of the population, 52,000 out of only 56,000 people, lives in the west, and since this is the world’s largest island it actually makes us the least populated country in the world. To some people that’s fantastic news in terms of leg room, peace and quiet, and breathing space, to others the mere thought of that much distance between tiny communities
