Beyond the Leaning Tower: Must-See Attractions in Pisa, Tuscany
Our two weeks in Tuscany in 2011 left us craving more. From that moment, we planned a longer stay to fully immerse ourselves in its unspoiled beauty.
Tuscany boasts rolling hillsides, ancient ruins, and historic landmarks, including several UNESCO World Heritage Sites. It's the perfect place to recharge, slow down, and gain fresh perspectives on life and travel. While luxury villas and fine wines tempt relaxation, they can't compare to the charm of local daily life that makes Tuscany a top global destination. Each town has unique character—Pisa, often reduced to its famous Leaning Tower, offers so much more.
The Campanile, or Leaning Tower
Pisa's iconic Leaning Tower stands out among Tuscany's many hilltop towers. Climb its spiral staircase to the sixth floor for panoramic views or inspect the seven bells up close.
Intended as a straight structure, soft ground caused its famous tilt. Yet, this 'flaw' makes it one of Europe's most recognizable landmarks, rivaling Rome's Basilica and Paris's Eiffel Tower.
The Palazzo Reale
Once home to the powerful Medici family, who shaped Florence for three centuries, this palace houses an impressive antique collection. Highlights include artifacts from the Gioco del Ponte tournaments, where participants risked their lives for entertainment. View authentic armor, weapons, and relics on display.
The Cathedral of Pisa’s Baptistery
The world's largest baptistery, a 12th-century marvel on Piazza del Duomo beside the Leaning Tower, features vivid depictions of St. John the Baptist's life. Its remarkable acoustics create echoes lasting minutes—whisper carefully!
The Campo Santo
This elegant 13th-century cemetery, known as Pisa's Campo Santo, served as an eternal resting place for local elites. Lifelike statues of men and angels adorn it, blending art, culture, and history into a must-visit site.
Just as you wouldn't limit Paris to the Eiffel Tower or New York to the Statue of Liberty, explore Pisa for Tuscany's rich history.
You can see our top five towns in Tuscany here. Surprisingly, Pisa didn't make the list—Tuscany's laid-back gems are that exceptional!
