Centla: Mexico's Richest Delta Ecosystem

The delta that is formed by the Grijalva and Usumacinta rivers, before culminating in the Mexican Gulf, bathes the land of the Centla municipality, in Tabasco. Its name comes from the Nahuatl and means in the cornfield.

 

The wetland that is formed by both rivers is the biggest in Northamerica and is the most important zone of runoff water in Mexico. The great array of biological diversity at the zone is a treasure that must be preserved and appreciated.

 

The Pantanos of Centla biosphere reserve is home to more than 255 species of birds, more than 100 mammals, 68 reptiles, more than 50 fish species and around 27 amphibians. In addition the vegetation is extremely diverse, with more than 500 species, grouped in different ecosystems.

 

Thanks to the curiosity that this place awakes in the visitors, ecotourism has grown and there are different forms of enjoying the Pantanos of Centla. You can take a boat trip, strolling through the area or enjoying the view in its oriels.

 

The biggest town in this municipality is Frontera and is located 74 kilometers from Villahermosa, the capital of the state. Nearby you will also find the town of Quintin Arauz, located inside the biosphere reserve. There are other important towns like Villa Vicente Guerrero, Villa Cuauhtemoc, Simon Sarlat, Ignacio Allende, Francisco I. Madero and the ejido La Estrella.
