Discover Pisa Beyond the Leaning Tower: Hidden Gems and Insider Tips
In this installment of our Go Beyond series, explore the Pisa overlooked by most tourists rushing to Tuscany's more famous spots.
When you think of Pisa, the Leaning Tower comes to mind first. Many visitors stop only for the classic photo op before heading to Florence. Herds of cruise passengers and tour groups arrive, snap pictures holding up the tower, and depart.
Without the Leaning Tower, Pisa might be skipped for Florence's grandeur, San Gimignano's charm, or Siena and Lucca's medieval allure.
Let others pass it by—discover this vibrant university town beyond Campo dei Miracoli. Enjoy scenic river promenades, lively plazas, nearby beaches, thermal spas, and authentic Tuscan cuisine.
Campo dei Miracoli
The Leaning Tower is iconic and unmissable. Visit Campo dei Miracoli for your photos, but linger to appreciate the full square: Pisa's main religious monuments, including the 11th-12th century Cathedral, stunning Baptistery, and Camposanto graveyard.
The Baptistery's round Romanesque dome features sculptures and paintings. Climb up and experience its remarkable acoustics—the guard often demonstrates with echoing chants that sound like music.
Tip: Book Leaning Tower tickets online in advance (€18) for specific times to skip lines.
The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta is a pinnacle of Pisan Romanesque architecture and one of Italy's finest.
Camposanto Monumentale, at the square's northern edge, is Pisa's historic cemetery for nobility.
Via Roma and Via Francesco Crispi
From Pisa Centrale station, it's a 30-minute walk to Campo dei Miracoli along these lively streets. Peek into shops, cafés, and restaurants. Cross Solferino Bridge for Arno River views, even if not arriving by train.
The Arno River Promenade
The Arno winds through Pisa, flanked by a picturesque promenade and pastel yellow-beige buildings.
Stroll from Solferino Bridge to Ponte di Mezzo and back, or extend to Ponte della Fortezza. Stop at art café Babette (Lungarno Mediceo 15) for coffee amid local artworks. Pass Medici Palace, Toscanelli Palace, and San Matteo church in the Santa Maria quarter.
Tip: Northwest of Ponte di Mezzo on Lungarno Pacinotti, try La Bottega del Gelato, Pisa's top gelateria.
Piazza Garibaldi and Piazza XX Settembre flank Ponte di Mezzo, forming Pisa's true center. Here begins Borgo Stretto, an elegant arched street with upscale boutiques.
Don't miss Pasticceria Salza for exquisite pastries.
Piazza delle Vettovaglie
This medieval square, ringed by stone arches and towers, buzzes with local restaurants and a traditional market—far from tourist crowds.
Old Citadel & Guelph Tower
In the Tersana neighborhood north of the Arno, climb Torre Guelfa atop the Cittadella for panoramic views including the Leaning Tower. This 13th-century fortress launched ships—a hidden gem.
Piazza dei Cavalieri
Pisa's second major square was once its political heart. Admire Palazzo della Carovana's Renaissance façade, Palazzo dell'Orologio, and churches of Santo Stefano and San Rocco.
The Beaches
Pisa's Mediterranean beaches are easily reached by bus: Marina di Pisa (10km), Tirrenia south of it, or Viareggio (30km north), Puccini's hometown.
Street Art and Keith Haring Mural
Street art fans will love the graffiti and Keith Haring's giant mural (a gift to Pisa) between Via Giuseppe Mazzini and Via Massimo D'Azeglio, off Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II.
Culinary Pisa
Tuscan staples shine, but try Pisa specialties: frog soup, San Michele white bean soup, bavettine sul pesce, spaghetti with Pesto Pisano (with pine nuts, unlike Genovese), and Torta co' bischeri (pine nuts, chestnuts, chocolate).
Tip: Avoid Campo dei Miracoli eateries; head to San Martino neighborhood south of the Arno or Piazza delle Vettovaglie for authentic spots.
Relax in a Spa
Pisa's thermal springs offer wellness: Casciana Terme for therapies, San Giuliano Terme for mineral-rich waters.
Tips for Visiting Pisa
Cheaper than Florence or Siena, Pisa is a smart Tuscany base. Frequent cheap trains to Florence (3/hour), Lucca (1/hour) via Trenitalia.
Pisa Airport is walkable to the tower (20 mins); budget flights from Europe start at €30.
