Villa de Santiago: Monterrey’s Magical Resort in the Cumbres de Monterrey National Park

One of the favorite resorts of the people of Monterrey is the charming Villa de Santiago, located 37 kilometers ( 23 miles ) south of Monterrey, in the state of Nuevo León, and incorporated into the Pueblos Mágicos (Magical Towns) program since 2006.

 

Nestled in the Cumbres de Monterrey National Park, the town of Santiago is located in a privileged environment of intense green and furrowed by streams with beautiful waterfalls and canyons throughout its geography. This is why it has become the favorite destination for lovers of adventure sports, ecotourism, and strong emotions.

 

The colonial-style villa has several buildings that stand out for their beauty. The 18th-century parish church of Santiago Apóstol is the most emblematic and was built on the highest part of a promontory, on the edge of the Prietos and Santa Rosalía haciendas, which donated land for the atrium and the main square.

 

Next to the religious building is the interesting Museo de Historia (History Museum), which along its three rooms covers the evolution of Santiago from the first indigenous settlements and through colonization to the different historical vicissitudes of the country. There you can also find the Palacio Municipal (Municipal Palace). Other points that call attention are the Casa de la Cultura (House of Culture) and the Los Muros gallery, which has a painting and sculpture exhibition.

 

An elevation very close to the historical center serves as a viewpoint to obtain a complete panorama of the Pueblo Mágico (Magical Town), its surroundings, and also of the dam of La Boca or Rodrigo Gómez, which is its official name. Precisely on the waters of this reservoir you can take boat rides or do nautical sports, such as kayaking. In addition, the place is surrounded by restaurants where it is an excellent idea to try the local cuisine.
