Camino de Santiago Packing List: Essentials for Your 500-Mile Pilgrimage (From a Pilgrim's Experience)
When planning my 500-mile Camino de Santiago hike on the Camino Francés, thorough preparation was essential for success. First-timers often ask, "What to pack for the Camino de Santiago?" Packing light is critical—every extra kilo matters when carrying your gear daily (though services exist to transport it). Drawing from my five-week journey, here's my detailed packing list, including what I used, skipped, and wish I'd included. I researched blogs, forums, and gear reviews extensively as a hiking novice for this scale.

Before diving in, notes on regrets: Items I brought but didn't need, others' must-haves I skipped, and essentials I overlooked.
What to Pack for the Camino de Santiago
What I Packed but Didn't Need
Compeed Blister Plasters
Popular among hikers, courtesy of my pharmacist sister. Gratefully unused—I gave some away. Pharmacies stock them everywhere along the route. Buy on-site unless blister-prone (they're lightweight anyway).
Rain Gear
My Frogg Toggs suit saw action twice (Pyrenees Day 1, Najera to Santo Domingo). September's mild weather made it skippable, but Galicia threatened rain. Ponchos are lighter alternatives. Essential for October/November (~$20/set).
Mosquito Repellent
Travel-sized bottle untouched. Rare complaints; possibly bedbugs mistaken for bites.
What Others Packed (That I Skipped)
Sleeping Bag
Most brought lightweight ones for albergues' basic sheets/pillows. My cotton liner sufficed in September (often too warm), but chilly nights made me envious. Liners for summer; bags for cooler seasons.
Uniqlo/Fleece Jacket
Cool mornings tempted me, but layering (tank, long-sleeve, windbreaker) worked. Ideal if backpack-transported or in spring/fall.
Sunglasses
Fine without on meseta (plateau); eye-sensitive pilgrims needed them.
Hiking Poles
Popular for knees/mountains; hostels store them. I skipped—awkward for photos/phone use. Readily available en route; recommend collapsible for knee issues.
Hat
Sweat-prone, I used sunscreen. Visor for sun-sensitive skin.
Headlamp/Flashlight
Phone sufficed for night needs; we started post-sunrise (bewildering why 90% leave in dark—scenery suffers). Handy for pre-dawn walkers.
DSLR Camera
Left heavy Canon behind; Sony A6000 mirrorless excelled. Phones suffice now; DSLRs for those forwarding packs.
What I Wish I'd Packed More Of
Sock Liners (Second Pair)
Blister prevention marvel; one pair meant daily washing. Pair with Smartwool socks.
Swiss Army Knife
Forgot due to carry-on rules. Vital for picnic prep (fruit, cheese). Victorinox multifunction wins.
My Detailed Camino de Santiago Packing List
Backpack
Oscillated 35L Lowe Alpine (fine for shorter hikes) lacked side pockets for water/hip belt essentials. Max 35L prevents overpacking; test-fit in-store (REI excels). Built-in rain cover mandatory.
Next time: Models with pockets.
Shoes for the Camino de Santiago
Shoes/backpack = hike-makers/breakers. Break in via 15km+ hikes. Varied sights: boots to sneakers.
Keen Targhee II (Waterproof Hiking Shoes)
Wide toe-box for swelling; 357g/pair. Bulky but reliable.
Teva Tirra Hiking Sandals
Impromptu buy; lifesaver for blisters (~600g/pair, waterproof). Alternated for relief.
Fila Flip-Flops
Post-hike/shower essential; soft sole/memory foam ideal.
