Sage Mountain National Park: Virgin Islands' Highest Peak and Premier Hiking Destination

Standing at 1,716 feet, Sage Mountain is the tallest peak in the Virgin Islands. This 92-acre national park offers seven scenic trails, including the main path from the parking lot that meanders through lush greenery to a peaceful picnic area. For a rewarding loop, continue on the central trail and return via the north trail—be ready for potentially muddy conditions. The entrance fee is US$3, though it hasn't been actively collected in recent years.
The park's humid, misty atmosphere is alive with bo-peep frogs, lizards, and towering 20-foot fern trees that evoke a prehistoric era. Allocate about two hours for your hike. Prefer a shorter visit? Head directly to the viewing platforms near the parking lot for breathtaking panoramas of the USVI and BVI.
At the trailhead, Jim Cullimore, owner of the Mountain View gift shop and restaurant (open 9am to 3pm), shares invaluable park insights. Buy a souvenir, and he'll equip you with a map and expert trail navigation tips.
