The Happiness of Pursuit: Finding My Quest and a Book Giveaway

After reading Chris Guillebeau’s inspiring book, The Happiness of Pursuit, one sentence resonated deeply with me. Just 20 pages in, I knew it was time to identify and embark on a quest of my own.

Guillebeau chronicled his monumental quest to visit every country in the world before age 35. Despite overcoming numerous obstacles and setbacks, he persevered. The book goes beyond his story, exploring diverse quests from people he met along the way—ranging from self-discovery and academic pursuits to athletic and creative challenges.

He shares stories of individuals who have completed their quests or are nearing success, detailing their motivations, strategies for overcoming roadblocks and doubters, and what truly defines a quest.

The Happiness of Pursuit: Finding My Quest and a Book GiveawayWhat Defines a Quest?

While many set goals like getting fit, running a marathon, traveling to 50 countries, or honing photography skills, a quest is far more profound.

Guillebeau defines a quest as a challenging pursuit with a clear goal and endpoint, requiring sacrifice and fueled by intense internal motivation—often bordering on obsession. Progress happens incrementally. Remarkable examples include Laura Dekker, who at 16 became the youngest to solo circumnavigate the globe by sailboat; Martin Powell, who ran 250 marathons in a year; and Thomas Hawk, who took, edited, and published one million photos. Each quest is uniquely ambitious.

Craving a Personal Challenge

The book struck a chord because I’m ready for a new challenge. Guillebeau prompts readers: “What’s the next chapter of your story?” After significant life changes this year, I’ve pondered this often.

I’ve committed to my own quest, though details remain under wraps. It won’t be travel-focused—challenges like walking the Camino de Santiago or visiting all UNESCO sites feel achievable but not quest-worthy for me. Cycling from Europe to China or all U.S. states? Already done. My quest demands pushing physical limits. That’s the teaser for now! 😊
