Transatlantic Travel on a Budget: My Experience Flying Norwegian Air's Boeing 787 Dreamliner
I was initially skeptical about flying Norwegian Air's new Dreamliner for a transatlantic journey. Could a budget airline deliver on long-haul flights? Past experiences with some European low-cost carriers had left me wary, including unexpected fees and uncomfortable conditions.
However, Norwegian impressed me from the start. Fares are remarkably affordable: Stockholm to San Francisco starts at $187, London to New York at $249 (higher due to steep airport fees at Gatwick and JFK; Stockholm-NYC is $158, Oslo-NYC $167). Booking early unlocks these deals, but even last-minute options like my Berlin-London flight at 29 Euros just five days out were competitive.

Check-in was seamless—no printed boarding pass needed; my passport sufficed. The Boeing 787 Dreamliner exceeded expectations: spacious legroom (even for my 5'7" frame with long legs), seatback pockets, and personal IFE screens with extensive movies, TV, music (from chart-toppers to jazz and classics), and more—plenty for an 11-hour flight like Copenhagen to Los Angeles.
Modern features include extra-large windows with electronic dimming, circadian lighting, lower cabin pressure to combat jet lag, USB ports, and AC power outlets. It's also the most fuel-efficient aircraft available, appealing to eco-conscious travelers.
The high-tech snack bar via 9" touchscreen delivers orders promptly, though items like $11 sandwiches are pricey—expected for low fares. Pre-book hot meals for convenience.
Accessories like blankets ($5) or headsets ($3) are extra, but I used my own. Premium Economy includes these plus meals. My pre-paid vegetarian meal was underwhelming, but service was otherwise impeccable.

Fare options: LowFare is basic; LowFare+ ($60 more) includes seat selection, checked bag, and meal. For a two-week-out booking: LowFare + extras reached $382; LowFare+ at $357 is better value. Credit card fees are 1.99% ($7.30 avoidable with debit). Carry-on only? LowFare totals $304. A 4-hour hold option adds flexibility.

West Coast routes shine: SFO-Oakland to Stockholm $187, LAX-London $249, LAX-CPH roundtrip $465. Connect cheaply within Europe. Ideal for no-frills travelers prioritizing savings. My flight was comfortable and reliable—highly recommended, just budget for extras.
Note: Long-haul to Bangkok from $204 too!
