Lake Allatoona Visitor Center & Museum – Explore History, Recreation, and Natural Beauty
Lake Allatoona, a 12,000‑acre reservoir in northwest Georgia, offers an abundance of outdoor activities. Whether you bring your own boat or rent one from one of Cartersville’s four marinas—houseboats, pontoons, or ski boats—you’ll find plenty of water sports and fishing opportunities.
With more than 600 lakeside campsites, the park accommodates both RVs and tent campers, providing easy access to hiking trails, picnic areas, and scenic viewpoints.
The Corps of Engineers Visitor Center, perched at the top of the dam, showcases the region’s history and natural resources. Open daily year‑round, it features interactive exhibits and a short documentary about Lake Allatoona’s creation and the surrounding environment.
The on‑site museum chronicles the origins of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Starting with the establishment of the Chief Engineer role during the Revolutionary War, the exhibit covers the Corps’ evolution after the war, its re‑establishment with the Constitution, and its pivotal role in the area’s early Indian settlements, gold mining, iron production, and modern infrastructure.
The Visitor Center’s hours are Monday–Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., except on holidays. Admission is free, and the museum and visitor center are open year‑round.
