Discover Unique Gifts at Online Museum Shops: Support Cultural Institutions This Holiday Season

The holidays are coming, and this year, many of us find ourselves thinking more carefully about how we will spend our money to bolster our community. If you are searching for thoughtful gifts that will not only delight the recipient but also do a good turn for a worthy organization, consider supporting our region’s one-of-a-kind museums by shopping at their online museum stores. Not only are they stocked with unique, creative gifts for all ages, but your purchase helps these nonprofit museums at a critical time. Of course, another great option is to buy a gift membership if your intended recipient lives locally, and that gift will be sure to be appreciated all year.

Here’s a list of some of my favorites, featuring art, jewelry, apparel, toys, Seattle memorabilia and more, including lots of options by local makers. Looking for hand crafted jewelry? Hand blown glass ornaments? A gift for the grunge fan in your life? The perfect octopus mask? A gorgeous Marimekko tray? A Bruce Lee water bottle? A Boeing 777-9 model? The genius “Beer Hiking” guide set? Browse on for these, and so much more!

Happy shopping!

One of SAM’s monthly REMIX parties I recently spent a week in Baltimore attending the American Alliance of Museums‘ annual conference. We’re looking forward to hosting their 2014 meeting in Seattle next May. Which is cause for its own article, but that’s not my topic for today. Immersed in the sessions and conversations of nearly 5,000 museum professionals, at a conference themed around “The Power of Story,”  I found myself thinking a lot about our museums.
