Epic Zion Narrows Hike: Breathtaking Scenery and Adventure in Utah's Zion National Park
Springdale, Utah
Zion National Park stands as one of America's premier natural wonders. The Zion Narrows hike offers a unique adventure, wading through a river flanked by towering canyon walls.
With years of hiking experience—from wildlife-rich jungles in Costa Rica to active volcanoes in Guatemala—I've explored countless trails. Yet, the Narrows in Utah's Zion National Park ranks among the most unforgettable in the U.S.
Zion Canyon features a 15-mile stretch of dramatic 1,500-foot sandstone cliffs sculpted by the Virgin River. The Narrows, the park's most popular hike, weaves through sections as narrow as 25 feet—earning its name.
National Geographic rates it among America's 100 Best Adventures.
Hiking Zion Canyon
What sets the Zion Narrows apart is that much of the trail follows the river itself, with waist-deep wading or short swims where sheer walls leave no dry path.
I visited in November during the cooler, off-peak season, which meant fewer crowds—a welcome advantage despite the chilly conditions.
Rising before dawn, I packed a lunch and gear, driving from my hotel in charming Springdale into the park. Herds of bighorn sheep grazed roadside, adding to the scenic drive to the trailhead.
Icy Waters of the Narrows
For permit-free hikes, begin at the Temple of Sinawava, accessible by shuttle if needed. The initial mile, the Riverside Walk, is a paved dry path.
Beyond that, enter the river. In fall, hikers often don waterproof pants, boots, and neoprene socks against the 40°F waters.
Opting out of rentals, I wore shorts and standard hiking shoes—a regrettable choice. Within two hours, my feet were numb, like ice blocks.
Stunning Slot Canyon Scenery
Despite the discomfort, the jaw-dropping vistas distracted me: soaring rust-hued sandstone walls, smoothed and sculpted by the river's force, glowing in morning light.
On my 6-hour round trip past landmarks like Wall Street and The Narrows, I encountered only about 15 others—mostly photographers capturing the golden hour.
The Zion Narrows hike left a lasting impression, securing its place among my top hiking experiences. ★
