Ultimate Self-Drive Guide to Iceland's Golden Circle: Route, Map & Top Highlights
Golden Circle, Iceland
Self-driving Iceland's Golden Circle is a must-do day trip from Reykjavik. This 300 km (190 mi) loop showcases stunning landmarks, ideal for layover visitors or short stays.
If a full Ring Road adventure isn't feasible, renting a car for the Iceland Golden Circle Route offers an unforgettable shorter alternative packed with natural wonders.
The Golden Circle is a scenic 190-mile loop from Reykjavik into Iceland's southern uplands and back—easily completed in one day.
Perfect for travelers with limited time, like those on a Europe layover.
Self-driving lets you set your own pace and linger at highlights.
From our Reykjavik base, my friend Kiersten and I rented a car to explore the Golden Circle (Gullni hringurinn in Icelandic), visiting its top attractions.
This expert guide, based on our firsthand experience, covers preparation, accommodations, and must-see spots for your self-drive adventure.

Top Golden Circle Highlights
1. Þingvellir National Park
Heading northeast from Reykjavik on Route 36, our first stop was Þingvellir National Park.
Site of Iceland's ancient parliament (930 AD), where chieftains debated laws at Lögberg.
Here, North American and Eurasian plates diverge, forming fissures like Silfra—famed for crystal-clear dives.
2. Pet Icelandic Horses
Valleys, farms, and fresh snow framed our drive, with Icelandic horses grazing roadside.
These sturdy steeds, introduced in the 9th century, are no ponies—locals are proud!
Spot friendly herds on farms. Park safely, approach fences for pets and photos.
3. Geysers At Haukadalur
60km from Þingvellir, Haukadalur's geothermal zone features Geysir (namesake of all geysers) and active Strokkur.
Strokkur erupts every 5-10 minutes, hurling water 30m high amid steaming vents and mud pools.
Visitor center offers soup and gifts.
“Life leaps like a geyser for those who drill through the rock of inertia.” ~ Alexis Carrel
4. Gullfoss Waterfall
Hvítá River plummets 32m into a canyon at Gullfoss—"Golden Falls," rainbow-lit in sunlight.
Paths lead close for misty views; one of Iceland's icons. Slight backtrack to rejoin route.
5. Kerid Crater Lake
Sunset bathed red Kerid Crater in glow, its blue lake contrasting green slopes.
Collapsed volcano; quick 5-min hike to base. Underrated gem—worth the stop.
6. Nesjavallaleið Geothermal Plant
Counterclockwise? Scenic backroad to Nesjavallaleið plant through serene landscapes.
Adds 45 mins; snowy in winter (avoid then). Spot ION Adventure Hotel en route.
7. Hiking Kerlingarfjöll Mountains
Highland detour: Kerlingarfjöll's rhyolite peaks and hot springs via F-roads (4x4/summer only).
Overnight adventure—camp or cabin. Not for day trips.
