Ultimate 6-Day North Island Road Trip Itinerary: New Zealand's Top Highlights

Discover the ultimate 6-day road trip itinerary across New Zealand’s North Island, packed with stunning volcanoes, pristine beaches, ancient caves, and charming bohemian towns. This guide covers top attractions, accommodation recommendations, and essential packing tips, based on my firsthand experience exploring the region.

New Zealand’s two main islands—North and South—offer endless adventures. I recently rented a campervan for a North Island road trip, hiking to waterfalls, soaking in geothermal pools, swimming in crystal-clear waters, and boating through world-renowned glowworm caves.

With just six days, we focused south of Auckland. For extended trips, head north to the Bay of Islands (which I enjoyed during a South Pacific cruise).

Day 1 & 2: Auckland & Coromandel Peninsula

Auckland is an ideal launchpad for a North Island road trip. Though I only passed through, its highlights—Sky Tower views, Waiheke Island vineyards, and world-class food tours—make it worth extra time.

Drive 2.5 hours to the Coromandel Peninsula (a ferry crosses the harbor select days). We spent two full days here amid abundant attractions like Hot Water Beach, Cathedral Cove, Kauri Forest, historic Coromandel Town, geothermal springs, Driving Creek Railway, and hiking/biking trails. Four days wouldn’t suffice!

Day 3: Hobbiton & Rotorua

Hobbiton is a must for any North Island road trip, whether you're a Lord of the Rings fan or not. A 2-3 hour drive from Coromandel, this Waikato farm set features hobbit-hole facades, the Green Dragon Inn, and photo ops galore.

Book a guided tour for insider movie stories—it's essential for the full experience.

Continue 1 hour to Rotorua, a geothermal wonderland of geysers, hot springs, lakes, bike trails, campsites, and Māori culture. I loved zorbing (invented in NZ), lakeside camping, and thermal pools. Don't miss The Redwoods in Whakarewarewa Forest: 14,000 acres of hikes, lakes, boardwalks, and world-class mountain biking (IMBA gold-rated).

Day 4: Kerosene Creek & Waikite Valley Thermal Pools

Day 4 is for thermal bliss. Kerosene Creek, 30km from The Redwoods, offers free geothermal soaks where hot springs mix with cool stream water. Weekends get crowded.

10km away, Waikite Valley Thermal Pools boasts New Zealand’s largest pure geothermal source. Relax in springs, private spas, gardens, or eco-trails. We camped onsite with easy pool access, plus laundry, kitchen, and showers.

Day 5: Waitomo Glowworm Caves

Two hours from the pools, Waitomo Caves house unique Arachnocampa luminosa glowworms. Guided tours (running 100+ years) cover 30-million-year-old history, wildlife, and formations.

Day 6: Raglan

100km northwest, surf mecca Raglan offers Ngarunui Beach lessons, Bridal Veil Falls, Mt Karioi hikes, art galleries, and harbor cruises amid natural beauty.

Extend Your Trip: More North Island Gems

Six days is just a taste. Consider these:

Karekare Waterfall: 1-hour drive from Auckland; easy 0.5-mile trail to a 30m fall and pool.

Lake Taupo: Waikato water sports haven with geothermal beaches, formed by a massive eruption.

Huka Falls: North of Taupo; thunderous 11m drop with 220,000L/second flow.

Bay of Islands: 144 islands north of Auckland for Hole in the Rock, trails, wildlife.
