Ultimate Guide to Calakmul: Mexico's Hidden Mayan Ruins in Campeche
Campeche, Mexico
Deep in the Yucatan Peninsula's jungle biosphere lies Calakmul, an ancient Maya city and my top archaeological site in Mexico for its remoteness and authenticity.
Unlike popular sites like Chichen Itza or Tulum, Calakmul sees few visitors due to its isolated location near the Guatemala border, making it a true off-the-beaten-path gem.
Reaching it demands a dedicated journey, far from tourist hubs.
Perfect for adventurers seeking an untouched Maya experience.
Situated in Campeche on the Yucatan Peninsula, the site spans 2 square kilometers (0.77 sq mi), with many areas still unexcavated. With only about a dozen daily visitors, it offers an immersive, Indiana Jones-style adventure.
This expert guide shares practical tips for visiting Calakmul, drawn from my three trips, plus fascinating history on Mexico's premier Mayan ruins.

Calakmul Maya Ruins Travel Guide
At its peak, Calakmul housed around 50,000 people. Biologist Cyrus Lundell rediscovered it in 1931 while flying overhead, naming it for the two prominent mounds visible amid the flat jungle.
Calakmul translates to "two adjacent mounds" in Maya.
As capital of a vast kingdom, it oversaw 20 secondary cities like La Muñeca, Naachtun, Sasilha, Oxpemul, and Uxul, with a total population nearing 1.7 million.
It frequently clashed with rival Tikal in modern Guatemala until Tikal's victory around 700 AD led to Calakmul's abandonment and jungle overgrowth.
UNESCO designated the ruins and surrounding jungle a World Heritage Site in 2002.
Opening Hours & Entry Fees
Calakmul opens daily from 8am to 5pm, but factor in over an hour's jungle drive from the nearest town.
Fees include: 40 MXN highway toll per person on Highway 186; 65 MXN National Park entry after 20 km; and 55 MXN site admission.
Total: approximately 160 MXN (~$10 USD) per person.
Calakmul Ruins Highlights
Pyramid Structure 1
Key structures include towering Pyramids 1 and 2. Structure 1, the site's second-tallest at 130 feet (40 meters), is climbable—a rarity among Mexican Maya sites.
Steep, narrow steps demand caution, especially if heights unsettle you.
Pyramid Structure 2
Structure 2, the tallest and largest in the Maya world at 150 feet (50 meters), was built in layers over centuries. Nine royal tombs, some with jade masks, have been uncovered inside.
The Mayan Ball Court
The ball court hosted ritual games over 3,500 years old—the world's first organized sport. Players maneuvered a rubber ball (symbolizing the sun) through high stone hoops using no hands or feet.
Carvings imply the winning captain's ritual sacrifice as honor. Games settled disputes or averted wars between cities.
Chiik Nahb Acropolis
North of the main site, the Chiik Nahb Acropolis ("Place of the Water Lily") offers prime views of Structure 2. Recently unearthed painted murals add to its allure.
Ancient Stone Stelae
Intricate limestone stelae depict glyphs and figures, some retaining original pigments—an astonishing testament to time.
The Biosphere Reserve
Encircled by the 2,792-square-mile Calakmul Biosphere Reserve, the site teems with wildlife: ocellated turkeys, howler and spider monkeys, Baird's tapirs, toucans, and rarely, jaguars.
Spot animals during early morning or late afternoon drives.
Getting To Calakmul
More remote than other Maya sites, I've reached it thrice: once by bus, taxi, and bike; twice by rental car (easiest option).
Rental Car
Book via Discover Cars for the best rates across local and international providers—the simplest way to rent in Mexico.
CANCUN: 464 km (6 hours).
TULUM: 334 km (4 hours).

ADO buses connect Campeche and Tulum to Xpujil, the nearest town. From there, taxis (~1 hour) to the site and back cost extra but wait during your visit.
