Top 5 Reasons to Visit Tasmania on Your Next Australia Adventure

As a seasoned traveler with visits to over 30 countries across six continents—and at least one new destination annually—I rarely revisit places. Yet, after my third trip to Australia, I've discovered its irresistible allure that draws me back.

Australia's appeal is undeniable, but high roundtrip fares often exceeding $1,000 and 24-hour flights from the East Coast make it a bucket-list item for many. First-timers typically explore Sydney's icons like the Opera House and Harbour Bridge, Melbourne's vibrant street art and coffee scene, the Outback's red deserts, or the Great Barrier Reef's diving wonders. Tasmania, however, is often overlooked—even by lifelong Australians.

If Tasmania evokes only the cartoon Tasmanian Devil or a Pitch Perfect character, here are five compelling reasons, drawn from my firsthand experience, to prioritize it on your itinerary:

1. Hobart: A Vibrant Capital with Small-Town Charm

Home to under 206,000 residents (versus Sydney's 4.3 million), Hobart punches above its weight. Enjoy the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens, Salamanca Place's bustling open-air markets, Australia's oldest continuously operating brewery (Cascade), top distilleries and wineries, and classic flat whites with meat pies. Just 30 minutes away, Mount Wellington offers rewarding hikes with panoramic city views.

2. MONA: One of the World's Most Innovative Museums

A quick ferry from Hobart, the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) is carved underground on Moorilla Winery grounds—Tasmania's second-oldest vineyard. Marvel at an ancient Egyptian sarcophagus mere steps from immersive installations like TVs blaring Madonna hits. This provocative space redefines contemporary art.

3. Vast National Parks and UNESCO World Heritage Sites

Google Maps reveals Tasmania's landscape as predominantly green. Outdoor enthusiasts thrive here. Cradle Mountain-Lake St. Clair National Park caps the renowned 40-mile Overland Track. Stay at iconic Pumphouse Point—one building onshore, another on a pier over Lake St. Clair. Rowboat, hike, share communal meals, spot platypuses, and disconnect—your phone will serve only as a camera.

4. Unique Wildlife, Including the Endangered Tasmanian Devil

Spot the fierce (and endangered) Tasmanian Devil in its only natural habitat. Encounter other marvels: echidnas (porcupine-like), pademelons (mini wallabies), platypuses, and wombats—chubby, cuddly marsupials that stole my heart.

5. Distinct Yet Endearingly Australian

Tasmania's magic defies easy description: drive hours without seeing another soul (but plenty of sheep), or hike eight miles through rainforests to echidna-dotted eucalyptus plains. It mirrors mainland Australia's warm hospitality while offering pristine Wineglass Bay beaches and Bruny Island's rugged coasts. Don't delay like I did—add Tasmania to your Down Under plans now.
