8 Compelling Reasons to Visit Mauritius: Pristine Beaches, Adventures, and Natural Wonders
In our first article on Mauritius, we shared tips on the best ways to get there and ideal times to visit. Now, discover why this Indian Ocean gem left us utterly enchanted.
Travel preferences are personal, influenced by countless factors. After our trip, we struggled to articulate our love for Mauritius—until reviewing photos and recounting stories with friends revealed these standout reasons.
1. Ile aux Cerfs and Starfish Galore
Starfish enthusiasts, this is your paradise. Rarely spotted in places like San Diego, these sea stars blanket the uninhabited Ile aux Cerfs, a quick boat ride from The Four Seasons Mauritius (with complimentary shuttles for guests).
Following resort staff advice, we trekked a dirt path to a secluded beach opposite the harbor. There, hundreds of starfish dotted the shore, midnight-colored rocks, and shallow waters. Wear water shoes—sea urchins abound!

2. Protected Lagoons
Mauritius's coral reefs encircle the island, forming calm, glassy lagoons safe from large fish like sharks. Vibrant marine life makes them ideal for snorkeling and glass-bottom boat tours. Perfect conditions also support kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), and beginner sailing lessons.

3. Ultimate Romance
Luxurious beachfront resorts abound for couples seeking reconnection or honeymoons. Mauritius draws romantics with its serene vibe—even at family-friendly spots like The St. Regis, kids were sparse. The tropical tranquility welcomes you from the airport.

4. Chamarel's Seven Colored Earth
This geological marvel was a serendipitous addition to our itinerary, thanks to our guide en route from Mahebourg to The St. Regis. These stable sand dunes display seven hues—red, brown, violet, green, blue, purple, and yellow—from decomposed volcanic rock. Mix the sands, and they mysteriously separate again.

5. Rhumerie de Chamarel
Nearby, the acclaimed Rhumerie de Chamarel offers 30-minute tours (Monday-Saturday, ~350 Rupees). The on-site L’Alchimiste restaurant serves exceptional lunches with estate-fresh local ingredients.
6. Warmhearted Locals
Mauritians exude hospitality, eagerly sharing their island pride. From resort staff to strangers, help was effortless. A local friend echoes this, with tales of everyday kindness.
7. Endless Water Sports
Whatever your thrill—snorkeling, sailing, windsurfing, kayaking, SUP, waterskiing, or surfing—Mauritius delivers. Winter winds fuel world-class windsurfing near The St. Regis (a spectator sport too). Calm mornings suit non-windy activities; high tides enable powered sports. Summer offers peak visibility and surfing.

8. Spectacular Sunrises and Sunsets
Despite the 12-hour time shift, we rose early daily for these daily spectacles—each uniquely breathtaking.
