8 Compelling Reasons to Visit Maui, Hawaii: Insider Tips from Repeat Travelers
Our recent adventure in Maui marked my fourth visit and my husband's second. Previous trips were limited to tourist areas and beach lounging, so I never truly experienced the island's essence. This time, we ventured deeper, and I fell deeply in love with Maui's authentic beauty.
The sunrise departing San Diego made our early start worthwhile. As we left the mainland, clouds parted over a small island, previewing the stunning vistas awaiting us in Maui.

8 Reasons to Plan a Visit to Maui, Hawaii
Surfing
We kicked off our trip with a thrilling two-hour surf lesson with Maui Wave Riders near Lahaina Harbor. Though waves were modest, guide Sonny kept it exciting and helped me overcome fears of shallow reef surfing. Exhausted yet exhilarated, we finally surfed authentic Maui waters.

Cliff Diving Ceremony
Unsure what to expect at the Sheraton Maui's cliff diving ceremony on our first evening, we were captivated. The cliff seemed modest from afar, but jumping from it the next day revealed the divers' bravery as they plunged headfirst into the ocean.

Ocean Views & Lazy Days
Our three days at the Sheraton Maui felt like paradise. The resort's layout—featuring multiple pools, a lazy river, and ocean views everywhere—created an idyllic escape.

Romantic Sunset Cruises
Though we rarely plan romance on trips, Maui inspires it. A sunset cruise with Gemini Charters offered relaxation as we sampled Bikini Blonde, a local brew, for the first time.

Ho’okipa Beach
Post-paragliding, we visited Ho’okipa Beach, a renowned surf spot, en route to a healthy lunch in Paia—one of Maui's charming towns. Perfect waves tempted us, but the spectacular views sufficed.

Wildlife
Outdoor breakfasts drew vibrant birds, including plump ones. The red-feathered bird pictured is the Hawaiian Cardinal.

Rainbows & Sunsets
Maui is rainbow heaven—we spotted them everywhere. Driving west Maui's rugged north shore, we paused at Honolua Bay's crystal waters revealing sand and reef. Masked swimmers likely encountered playful Hawaiian green sea turtles (Honu).

And the legendary sunsets.

Underwater Adventures
At Black Rock and Wailea Beach, we snorkeled, tried Snuba, and swam amid fish, sea turtles, and sharks. Our underwater camera failed (a recurring issue), so here's a Snuba turtle photo and a fun shot of my husband.
