Time Running Out: Captivating Time-Lapse Video of San Diego's Horton Plaza Mall

Horton Plaza in downtown San Diego boasts some of the most intriguing architecture of any mall I've explored. While malls aren't my usual haunt, the photographer in me was drawn to this one for its exceptional photo opportunities.

This image captures the frenzy of shoppers rushing to snag the next must-have item, amplified by the prominent clock evoking a sense of urgency.

Time wasn't just ticking for shoppers—it was running out for my companion Scott and me too. Shortly after this shot, a security guard approached, instructing us to stow our cameras for “safety reasons.”

When we inquired whose safety was at risk, he explained the mall owners' intellectual property concerns prohibited photography. Professional cameras draw scrutiny, unlike smartphone snaps shared freely on social media.

To me, such photos offer free promotion. Later, I discovered permits are available for tripods and shoots—which we promptly obtained for our return.

Here's a dusk view of the same scene and our time-lapse video from the second visit to Horton Plaza Mall.

Lighting conditions were far from ideal for our stills, with limited time and basic gear. We used iMovie for editing and a custom GarageBand track—no pro software needed.

Imperfect conditions shouldn't deter capturing beauty. This was our first time-lapse; share your thoughts!

Watch in full screen at 720p for the best experience. If the video doesn't load here, view it on YouTube.
