Discovering Medieval Castles and Vineyards in Emilia Romagna: A Day Trip from Bologna
During my visit to Bologna, I embarked on a memorable day trip into the Emilia Romagna countryside to savor local wines, explore lush vineyards, and capture stunning photos of medieval castles.
Our compact car navigated the winding country roads with the agility of a go-kart. Elaine, our knowledgeable guide originally from New Jersey, fell in love with an Italian and has made Italy her home for over a decade. Her confident driving showcased her deep integration into local life—a testament to her expertise in the region. As an usually anxious passenger, I relaxed by soaking in the scenic vineyards passing by.

While I adore Bologna's urban charm, the call of Emilia Romagna's countryside was irresistible. Films like Under the Tuscan Sun have popularized Tuscany's vineyards, but Italy boasts many other exceptional wine regions worth discovering.

As we sped along the twisting roads, a profound sense of familiarity washed over me, despite being thousands of miles from home. The rolling green hills, terraced vineyards, golden hayfields, and meandering rivers evoked cherished childhood memories in vast open landscapes.

The province of Piacenza is renowned for its hundreds of wineries and one of Italy's highest concentrations of castles. The allure of vineyards, fine wines, and historic fortresses had me thrilled from the moment we departed Bologna. Piacenza city is conveniently accessible by train from Milan or Bologna, after which renting a car unlocks the province's treasures.

Our first stop was Agriturismo Racemus in Ziano Piacentino, a charming farmhouse and B&B run by a welcoming couple. Open to travelers, it offers homemade cuisine and estate wines. We enjoyed an indulgent afternoon on their expansive covered porch, gazing over endless vineyards. Host Laura served fresh Italian specialties paired with generous pours from their vineyard.
Refreshed and slightly tipsy, we continued our scenic drive to Rocca D’Olgisio, a majestic castle perched atop a steep hill.

Dating back to at least 1037, Rocca D’Olgisio stands as one of Piacenza's oldest castles. The Bengalli family has owned it since 1979, transforming part of the fortress into five luxurious hotel rooms. The resident "guard" dog, Tom, charmingly posed for photos with guests.

Though my time in Piacenza was short, I formed a deep sentimental bond with this soulful corner of Emilia Romagna—aptly known as "the land with a soul."
