Israel's Negev Desert Wine Route: A 3-Day Itinerary Through Pioneering Vineyards

Deserts evoke images of endless sand, rugged rocks, and wandering camels. Yet Israel's southern Negev region surprises as a thriving wine destination. Innovative winemakers have crafted a boutique wine trail akin to a mini Napa Valley amid its arid slopes.

This transformation stems from visionary 21st-century farmers using computerized drip irrigation. Introduced to Israel in the 1950s by Polish-born innovator Simcha Blass, these 'spaghetti tubes' deliver water precisely over vast distances, preventing clogs. With less than 100mm of annual rainfall—mostly swept away by flash floods—the Negev exemplifies how expertise turns infertile soil into prime grape-growing terrain.

Wineries dot the landscape between Be’er Sheva and Mitzpe Ramon, where public transport is limited. Rent a car or join a guided tour for the optimal experience. Savor the Negev's tranquil vibe by taking it slow.

Day One

Begin in Be’er Sheva, the Negev's accessible gateway via bus or train. Drive 30km south on Hwy 40 through stark rocky vistas.

Rota Winery

Near Kibbutz Revivim—a sustainable agricultural commune—Rota Winery sits amid sand and cacti. Founded in 2004 by agriculturist-artist Erez Rota, it yields 10,000 bottles yearly of cabernet sauvignon, merlot, shiraz, and muscat of Alexandria. Enjoy a one-hour vineyard tour amid owner sculptures or taste wines in the shop.

Ramat HaNegev Winery

Drive 30km west to this oasis in remote Kadesh Barnea on the Egyptian-Israeli border, overlooking Sinai sands. Started as a family venture in 1997 by Alon Zadok, it's now led by son Yogev, a Tuscany-trained viticulturist. They produce over 80,000 bottles, including Alsace-inspired sweet Gewurztraminer. Eco-focused, it offers vineyard tours.

Boker Valley Vineyard Farm

Refuel with late lunch at this Hwy 40 gem: a wine lodge, restaurant, and farm store with local wines, jams, and olive oil. Run by an Israeli-Dutch duo, it features South African-style cabins. Unwind in the outdoor Jacuzzi with sunset views and a glass of wine.

Day Two

After stargazing, breakfast heartily then head down Hwy 40 to Kibbutz Sde Boker—former home and burial site of Israel's founding PM David Ben-Gurion, overlooking majestic Wadi Zin.

Sde Boker Winery

Stroll the kibbutz, then sample wines at this pioneer vineyard at its entrance—one of the region's first modern plantings, echoing ancient Nabataean traditions. Opened late 1990s by Napa Valley College alum Zvi Remak, it crafts premium zinfandel and carignan reds.

Carmey Avdat Winery

Lunch on gourmet goat cheese or pizza at nearby Kornmehl Farm, then visit this family eco-farm opposite Nabataean ruins of Avdat—home to an ancient Byzantine wine press. Their merlots boast a signature salty desert minerality. Free tours and six luxury rooms available.

Nana Winery

End in hilltop Mitzpe Ramon at Nana Winery, founded 2016 by vintner Eran Raz on Mt. Ramon. At 800m elevation with extreme diurnal shifts and dry soils, it excels in cabernet sauvignon, chardonnay, and chenin blanc—served in top Israeli restaurants. Evenings: Splurge at luxurious Beresheet hotel or budget at Green Backpackers hostel.

Day Three

Rise early for Makhtesh Ramon, Israel's Grand Canyon with epic Negev Highland vistas.

Neot Semadar

On 'desert time' (zaman hamidbar), cruise to this Arava Valley eco-kibbutz—Israel's southernmost vineyard growing merlot, chardonnay, shiraz, and muscat canelli. Beyond wines, enjoy its pink arts tower, solar fields, organic farm goods, and rustic restaurant.

Explore nearby eco-kibbutz Lotan’s mud houses, then conclude at Timna Park's ancient Egyptian copper mines and multimillion-year-old rock formations. The Negev reveals itself as a timeless odyssey beyond wine.

We’ve all heard of the tales of Narnia, hidden behind fur coats in a cupboard in the English countryside. Narnia is a land that few are able to enter from the outside world – a magical place where the inconceivable is possible. Looking back on a recent trip to Narvik I have found myself thinking about these two places, one real, one fantastical. I couldn’t help comparing their similarities. Before visiting this seaside town on the west coast of Norway I had heard many stories about the regio
