Ecuador's Thrilling Alternative Adventures: Caves, Whales, and Beyond
Ecuador offers far more than its iconic volcanoes and rainforests. Its diverse landscapes enable a wide array of adventures, and its compact size allows you to combine multiple experiences in a single trip. Spot birds in misty Andean cloud forests, embark on multi-day treks through lush national parks, summit towering volcanoes, or snorkel with manta rays, turtles, and sea lions in the Galápagos Islands. Enjoy top-tier surfing, mountain biking, and white-water rafting too.
Discover even rarer thrills in Ecuador's enchanting caves and rivers. This curated selection of unique adventures draws from the latest edition of Lonely Planet’s Ecuador & the Galápagos guidebook. Photographs by Alejandra X Castañeda.

Caving, Cueva de los Tayos
Nestled on the eastern Andean slopes amid rainforest, Cueva de los Tayos (Cave of the Oilbirds) is a spelunker's paradise. Access requires a 70m descent into stalactite-laden chambers that could occupy explorers for days or even a lifetime. A local guide is essential.
Tubing, Mindo
For a pure rush on Mindo's fern-fringed Río Mindo, nothing beats tubing in an inner tube. This white-water activity intensifies during rainy season—helmets and life jackets are mandatory.
This active volcano frames countless hikes from Baños. Currently closed to climbers, it offers a challenging ascent to Ecuador's 10th-highest peak when reopened. Photo by Alejandra X Castañeda
Whale Watching, Puerto López
Puerto López hosts around 400 humpback whales annually, making it a prime breeding ground. Boat tours from June to September yield superb sightings, peaking in July and August.
Puenting, Baños
In Baños, thrill-seekers can try puenting—a freefall leap from a bridge, swinging pendulum-style on a rope (like bungee without the rebound).

Canyoning, Baños
This rising Baños favorite combines rappelling down waterfalls, river swims, and canyon hikes for an exhilarating mix.
Sport Fishing, Salinas
Off Salinas, the continental shelf plunge creates prime deep-sea fishing. Target swordfish, sailfish, tuna, dorado, and black marlin from September to December. Charter boats here.
