The Insider's Guide to Mountain Biking in Rothrock State Forest
Iconic of Pennsylvania's rugged Ridge and Valley province in the Appalachian Mountains, the 96,250-acre Rothrock State Forest offers adventure seekers stunning ridgelines, rhododendron-filled valleys, spruce-lined wetlands, and expansive mixed-oak forests. Just outside State College, this vast forest features over 100 miles of mountain biking trails and nearly 190 miles of scenic roads, establishing it as a premier global destination for riders of all levels.
A Rich History
Over a century ago, the area now known as Rothrock State Forest was nearly barren, its timber felled to fuel iron furnaces. In the early 1900s, after local furnaces shuttered, Dr. Joseph Rothrock—Pennsylvania's 'Father of Forestry'—helped the state acquire 35,000 acres from an iron company. The land regenerated, encompassing much of the Seven Mountains region. During the 1930s Great Depression, Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) camps from 1933 to 1942 built trails, roads, and planted trees. Today, the Nittany Mountain Biking Association partners with the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources to maintain, expand, and enhance the trail network for off-road enthusiasts.
Classic Adventures
Rothrock's diverse terrain suits everyone, from experts tackling rocky singletrack to beginners building skills. Home to two International Mountain Biking Association (IMBA) Epic rides: the 36-mile Rothrock Trail Mix with rock gardens, ridge runs, and thrilling descents amid breathtaking scenery; and the 27-mile Cooper’s Gap Epic blending trails like the challenging Deer Tick and smooth Dutch Alvin.
For shorter rides, the 4.2-mile Tussey Mountain Trail climbs gradually to a wildfire-cleared ridgetop with panoramic views. Ride it out-and-back from Bear Meadows Road or extend into a loop. Competitive riders enjoy events like the seven-day Trans-sylvania Epic, Wilderness 101, and Rothrock Trail Mix (22-mile endurance or 19-mile short course).
