Centre Film Festival Spotlights Happy Valley's Local Talent and Authentic Storytelling
From November 5-7, the historic Rowland Theatre—the area's longest-running venue since 1917—hosts the Centre Film Festival, captivating the community with compelling stories. This event showcases local filmmakers and films from the Happy Valley area, with select screenings available virtually starting November 1.
“The Centre Film Festival tells the stories that are here in central Pennsylvania,” says festival co-founder, filmmaker, and Penn State professor Pearl Gluck. “There are so many great layers here—multigenerational, diverse stories. So many points of view. Richness comes when the truth can be told.”
Launched in 2019, the festival's mission is to authentically share stories while uniting generations—from high school students to seasoned professionals. Students participate in school workshops and later join industry experts on the jury. “That’s why it’s so important to keep the arts in school,” Gluck emphasizes. “These are our future filmmakers.”
The 2021 lineup captures the era's spirit, featuring Native American narratives, women-directed films, and stories on race, injustice, and incarceration. From humorous to heartbreaking, these works highlight the profound talent and vision in Pennsylvania's heartland.
“As a filmmaker, my work has always been infused with local culture,” Gluck notes. “Write what you know and know what you write. At the festival, we see stories that are so authentic because these storytellers know their world.”
“We believe Central Pennsylvania is rich with screen-worthy stories and the talent to make them.”
