The Obligatory PSU Pregame Show: Iconic Moments, Tailgate Must-Haves, and 2021 Penn State Football Outlook

The Obligatory PSU Pregame Show and Podcast, presented by HappyValley.com, returns this fall for its sixth season as head coach James Franklin and the Penn State Nittany Lions gear up for the 2021 campaign.

This beloved show has become a staple in Happy Valley, essential listening at tailgates and throughout the offseason. Hosted by PSU postal legend Mike “the Mailman” Herr, Penn State fans' favorite mail carrier; Brandon Noble, former defensive tackle for Penn State, the Dallas Cowboys, and the Washington Redskins; Chris Buchignani, five-time Sam’s Club member; and Kevin Horne, holder of three Penn State degrees and former managing editor of Onward State.

HappyValley.com: What is your most memorable game or moment from a Penn State football game?

Chris Buchignani: I’ve been fortunate to witness many legendary games and moments at Beaver Stadium, including Joe Paterno's historic 300th, 324th, 400th, and 409th wins. None resonate quite like the 2012 Senior Day upset over Wisconsin—the entire day, culminating in that remarkable outcome and Bill’s iconic post-game TV interview, remains unforgettable.

Brandon Noble: Tough choice, but my first ride on the blue buses into the stadium in 1992 stands out. Redshirting and recovering from a night out, I’m not sure of the opponent, but the empty tailgates and fans lining the road driving up highlighted the magic of Happy Valley Saturdays. Close runners-up: the 1995 Michigan game and the snowy 1996 Northwestern win where I played well.

Kevin Horne: To stand out, I’ll pick the 2017 Iowa road win and 2013 Wisconsin road upset—both vivid memories. The 2013 game, Bill O’Brien’s final one in blue and white, showcased the sanctioned team’s grit as 3-touchdown underdogs at Camp Randall. The 2017 Iowa victory felt like Penn State’s post-scandal statement, with Saquon Barkley’s masterpiece performance.

Mike the Mailman: The best moment happens before every home game: the Penn State Blue Band takes the field and captivates the crowd—the best band in the land!

Chris: I’m simple: booze, music, food, great companions, folding tables, solo cups, cheap beer, and Flip Cup hourly. Tailgating is about gathering with loved ones—football is just the excuse.

Brandon: Beer, grilled meats (even burnt), cheese, good bourbon, friends, and a chair.

Kevin: I’m not big on tailgating, but warm pulled pork nachos (real nachos, not just queso) with a cold beer might lure me out early. Probably not, though.

Mike the Mailman: Lots of people—especially Penn State alumni past and future!

HappyValley.com: Thoughts, expectations, or concerns for the 2021 PSU football team?

Chris: I expect 10 wins and a perfect September, fueled by Penn State’s tradition, Coach Franklin’s record, roster talent, and a strong offseason after 2020’s anomalies. Concern: What if last year was the true picture?

Brandon: Just better than last year. Loaded at skill positions (WRs, DBs, RBs), but the big guys—OL, DTs, LBs—must step up. Penn State’s OL has underperformed forever; last year’s D-line issues (angles, tackling, gap integrity) were glaring. Improvement there means contention.

Kevin: Mediocre defense, veteran QB, elite skill players—classic Franklin: 3 NY6 bowls (2 wins), 1 Big Ten title, stability amid frustration. Expect major bowl potential or head-scratching losses. I’m along for the ride. Go State!

Mike the Mailman: 15-0! Penn State wins the National Championship, edging Oklahoma in a thriller!
