Airline Fees and Taxes Explained: What to Know for Travelzoo Deals

Read this guide carefully. It provides an overview of potential additional fees and taxes that may apply when booking flights, air-inclusive vacations, or cruises on Travelzoo.

Government Fees and Taxes

U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations require that all airfare pricing—including flights, air-inclusive packages, and cruises—displays the total cost, incorporating government taxes and mandatory fees.

Common government taxes on flights include:

Passenger Facility Charges (PFCs): Up to $18 USD per itinerary, with minimums as low as $4.50.

Federal Excise Tax: 7.5% of the base airfare.

Segment Fee: Up to $4.00 USD per flight segment (one takeoff and landing).

September 11th Security Fee: $5.60 USD per one-way flight. Additional fees apply for layovers exceeding 4 hours domestically or 12 hours internationally (including to/from Alaska and Hawaii).

U.S. and International Departure/Arrival Charges: Up to $200 USD, depending on the itinerary.

Additional Fees

The following fees may apply based on booking method, itinerary, or other factors:

Baggage Fees: Airlines often charge for checked or carry-on bags ($15–$200 per segment), overweight (over 50 lbs), or oversize luggage (up to $450 internationally). Check individual airline websites for details.

After groggily waking up at 5:15 in the morning – before even the birds woke up – I was ready for my Goa hot air balloon experience. Flustered and windswept, I reached the Goa hot air balloon take-off location (after a 45 min scooter ride from my hotel at Agonda Beach, in South Goa). It
