Step Back in Time: Explore the Historic Hopsewee Plantation Near Myrtle Beach
A closer look at the Myrtle Beach area uncovers remnants of the Grand Strand's rich past—and America's early history.
Venture to the outskirts of Georgetown to find the Hopsewee Plantation, a genuine "historic jewel," as described by its engaging tour guide. This authentic home boasts original floors that have endured for over 200 years.
One standout feature is the blue paint on the ceiling above the front porch, known today as "haint blue." This tradition warded off spirits, or "haints," by mimicking the daytime sky.
The crowning glory is the spacious porch with breathtaking views of the grounds—ideal for unwinding on a crisp fall afternoon. It only lacked our favorite rocking chair and a tall glass of lemonade.
