We've explored eight of the 14 communities in the Grand Strand, uncovering what makes each one special—from top activities and dining to unique adventures. Today, we're spotlighting Socastee, Myrtle Beach's neighbor just west of Myrtle Beach International Airport. This historic gem is home to one of South Carolina's 10 operational swing bridges, built in 1935 over the Intracoastal Waterway. It's a beloved scenic photo spot for locals and visitors alike.
The Waccamaw National Wildlife Refuge protects diverse coastal river ecosystems, safeguarding fish, birds, wildlife, and plants across nearly 65,000 acres in Horry, Georgetown, and Marion counties. It encompasses large stretches of the Waccamaw and Great Pee Dee Rivers. Visit the outdoor centers to spot wildlife in its natural habitat.
Socastee's Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, showcases post-Civil War development. It features three homes, the swing bridge, a store, and a pecan grove. The Samuel S. Sarvis House, built in 1881 for merchant, store owner, and postmaster Samuel S. Sarvis (appointed in 1896), was restored and occupied until 2010. Tour this well-preserved landmark today.
The Thomas B. Cooper House, constructed in 1908 by another local postmaster, has been meticulously renovated. Nearby, the Thomas B. Cooper Store (built 1905, operated until 1932) stands beside a picturesque pecan grove with historic trees.

For sun-soaked thrills, hit the Intracoastal Waterway with Island Adventure Watersports. Their guided Backcountry Adventure jet ski tours highlight Socastee's natural beauty. Rentals include boats, kayaks, paddleboards, plus wakeboarding, tubing, waterskiing, and wakesurfing.
