Brookgreen Gardens' Brew at the Zoo: A Beloved Annual Fall Event in the Grand Strand

Brookgreen Gardens Brew at the Zoo: A Beloved Annual Fall Event in the Grand Strand

Brookgreen Gardens' Lowcountry Zoo hosts its popular annual "Brew at the Zoo" event each fall, like the 2021 edition on Saturday, November 6, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. This cherished occasion blends craft beer sampling, encounters with Brookgreen's remarkable animals, and ideal autumn weather. Attendees savor more than a dozen regional and national craft beers from top breweries, including Grand Strand Brewing, New South, Terrapin, Holy City, Wicked Weed, and others.

Tickets for such events typically cost $45 for Brookgreen members, $50 for the general public, and $20 for designated drivers (prices may vary; check current listings). One ticket per person is required, with limited space. Beyond the impressive beer selection, enjoy live entertainment from the Paul Grimshaw Band and diverse food options from food trucks.

The Lowcountry Zoo at Brookgreen Gardens is a must-visit anytime. See native Lowcountry animals—from otters and bobcats to birds—in habitats mimicking their natural woods, swamps, and waters. As one of five Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA)-accredited institutions in South Carolina, all residents are either captive-bred or injured rescues unable to survive in the wild. The zoo offers year-round classes, programs, and a seasonal "Whispering Wings" Butterfly Exhibit. I've taken my children multiple times—we always learn something new and have an unforgettable time!

  • Conquering Colossus Wall: Ride the Wild Surf on a Steep Slate Face

We decided to go to the area called Colossus Wall, a 50-metre- high sheer face, an unusually steep wall for slate. It’s south-facing and it’s exposed to the weather, meaning that although it gets the sun when it’s out, the Welsh rain that falls all year round is usually seeping out of the wall somewhere, making the already slippery slate even trickier. Spillett was raring to go and wanted to do a route called Ride the Wild Surf, which is an E4 – testing but nothing drastic. I decided I’d
