OBX's Newest Icon: The Marc Basnight Bridge Over Oregon Inlet
Hundreds of pedestrians, cyclists, and runners crossed the new bridge over Oregon Inlet for the first time during Community Day this year. Families, locals, pets, and visitors celebrated the long-awaited completion. Local officials and community leaders shared the Bonner Bridge's history and details on the nearly three-year project. Honoring the deep ties between residents and the inlet, a ceremonial wreath was tossed into the waters below. Opened to vehicles in late February 2019, it's now ready for your Outer Banks visits.

Bonner Bridge Replacement Project
This engineering marvel is the Outer Banks' newest landmark, rivaling the iconic lighthouses and Wright Brothers National Memorial. Stretching nearly 2.8 miles with a 90-foot clearance over Oregon Inlet, it ensures reliable access for travelers and anglers to the ocean and Hatteras Island, designed for a 100-year lifespan.
The project launched in March 2016 with a groundbreaking by former Governor Pat McCrory. Completed at $252 million by PCL Civil Constructors and HDR Engineering, it's named for former State Senator Marc Basnight—a Manteo High School graduate, local business owner creating jobs, and dedicated public servant advocating for education, infrastructure, environment, and community needs.

Innovative Design Features
The two-lane structure carries NC Highway 12, the only route linking Hatteras and Bodie Islands. Segmental and conventional methods deliver cost-effective durability. Reinforced stainless steel and premium materials combat corrosion from salt air and water. Built in five accelerated stages using offsite precast concrete, it offers wider navigational spans for boats and vessels.

Bonner Bridge History
Opened in 1963, the original Bonner Bridge replaced a weather-dependent, hour-long ferry across Oregon Inlet. Named for Congressman Herbert Covington Bonner, it spanned 130 feet for navigation. Approved by the state Board of Transportation, sections now form the Herbert C. Bonner Fishing Pier, with demolition completed by September 2019. (Photos: NCDOT)
