Dementia-Friendly Businesses and Restaurants on the Outer Banks (OBX)
The Dementia Task Force, in partnership with Healthy Carolinians of the Outer Banks in Dare County, offers vital support for caregivers navigating the challenges of caring for loved ones with memory loss, dementia, or Alzheimer’s.
Our objectives include educating the public through outreach programs, an annual caregivers’ conference, and small-group training. We provide ongoing support via mentoring and a monthly caregiver support group. Additionally, we connect individuals to essential resources from agencies like the Area Agency on Aging and Social Services.
Venturing beyond familiar surroundings can be daunting for those with dementia and their caregivers, often leading to isolation. Dementia-friendly training equips businesses, restaurants, staff, and managers to understand these challenges and respond effectively, reducing anxiety and encouraging community participation.
The purple seahorse serves as our local symbol for dementia. Derived from the Latin "hippocampus"—a brain region crucial for memory—look for the purple seahorse logo at participating partners to identify dementia-friendly locations.

Dementia-Friendly Restaurants
Dining out can be stressful for individuals with dementia and their caregivers. Trained restaurants possess the skills to ease this stress and enhance the experience. On outerbanks.org, filter for "Dementia Friendly" under Amenities, or view the full list here.

Dementia-Friendly Businesses
Activities like banking, shopping, and transportation present significant hurdles for those with dementia. Dementia-friendly businesses receive specialized training to adapt and improve experiences. The Outer Banks Visitors Bureau’s Welcome Centers in Manteo, Whalebone Junction, Kitty Hawk, and Hatteras Island are all certified, along with Dare County Department of Social Services, Dare County Transportation, Seaside Vacation Rentals, Southern Bank KDH, and Outer Banks Hospital. The hospital offers 8 trained volunteers available 365 days a year to sit with dementia patients, allowing caregivers respite or assisting those without support.
Dementia-Friendly Training
Free training is available to any business or organization. It delivers lasting benefits for customers, staff, and the community.
