From Fairways to Feasts: Best Post-Golf Dining in North Carolina's Outer Banks

I once thought nothing could pull me from the golf course or the ocean's mesmerizing sights and sounds—except the intense hunger sparked by a round of golf. But priorities shift. As a frequent visitor to North Carolina's Outer Banks (OBX), I discovered that descendants of Spanish Mustangs from 16th-century shipwrecks have roamed these white sandy beaches ever since. An occasional horse tour through their dune and seaside habitats tempts me away from the lush fairways of the northern banks. Then there's the beach itself. Nothing compares to sinking your toes into soft sand as waves from the Atlantic crash ashore. Yet the strongest pull from the fairway is always the primal urge for a great meal.

Reasons to Dig In

Golf builds a unique appetite, especially coastal rounds. Perhaps it's the salt air, perfecting putts, or escaping bunkers. After four hours with friends on this beloved game, a turn snack like a hot dog or peanut butter crackers only tides you over. The real rewards come post-round at your favorite OBX spots.

During multi-day golf trips to OBX, my group samples diverse restaurants. No matter the scorecard, great meals are always nearby. Beyond barbecue and seafood, options span from Kitty Hawk to Nags Head (home of Nags Head Golf Links). Here are our top refueling spots after OBX's premier courses.

First Off the Tee: Breakfast Favorites

For early tee times, start at Duck Donuts. Founded in Duck in 2006 with five OBX locations, it's the original for customizable, made-to-order doughnuts—conveniently scattered along the coast.

For a fuller breakfast on multi-course trips, visit Stack 'Em High Pancakes and So Forth. This icon opened in Kill Devil Hills in 1981 and added Kitty Hawk in 1985.

In a hurry? Bob's Grill in Kill Devil Hills, serving since the 1990s, lives up to its slogan: "Eat and Get the Hell Out." Enjoy plate-sized pancakes, hash browns, seafood burritos, or Angus burgers.

Afternoon Delights

Afternoon golfers, swing by John's Drive In in Kitty Hawk, opened in 1977 by a Pittsburgh family. Try the signature "Dolphin" sandwich with fresh tuna or dolphin, homemade tartar, and cocktail sauce.

Sam & Omie's in Nags Head, a staple since 1937 from two fishermen, offers omelets, burgers, prime rib, and seafood in a relaxed, beachy vibe.

Short on time? Grab from Dairy Queen near the Wright Brothers Memorial in Kill Devil Hills or Brew Thru drive-thrus, an OBX original since the 1970s.

True Après Golf: Dinner Highlights

Dinner timing flexes with your final putt. OBX shines here with fresh flavors.

Awful Arthur's Oyster Bar in Kill Devil Hills, the Outer Banks' first oyster bar, delivers fresh seafood, casual vibes, and ocean views—earning national acclaim.

Dirty Dick's Crab House in Nags Head boasts, "I Got My Crabs at Dirty Dick's." Their new spot offers ample space for all-you-can-eat crabs, rivaling Virginia and Maryland favorites.

Other standouts: The Black Pelican (Kitty Hawk's historic oceanfront spot with seafood, steaks, and pizzas); Hurricane Mo's Beachside Bar & Grill (local seafood, daily specials); The Bonzer Shack (laid-back surfer grill with 'Hippy Dip' apps); Tortuga's Lie (Nags Head dunes dining); Art's Place (best burgers, locals welcome); Mako's (versatile Kill Devil Hills eats); and La Fogata (authentic Mexican in Kitty Hawk).

After, After Golf: Sweet Finishes

Cap off with sweets like Booty Treats Ice Cream & Shave Ice near Nags Head Golf Links. Savor Hawaiian shave ice, malts, shakes, and sundaes.

The Outer Banks blends world-class golf and dining perfectly. For a tee-to-table adventure, OBX delivers fun, fuel, and unforgettable flavors.
