If you're ready to test your limits, here are the top events that make Chattanooga a must-visit for endurance enthusiasts.
RIVERROCKS
The annual RiverRocks festival attracts outdoor enthusiasts nationwide for three weeks of competitions in October. While pros compete at the highest level, most participants are everyday adventurers eager to tackle rock climbing, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, open-water swimming, trail running, and mountain biking. Complementing the action are film screenings, live music, and evening entertainment—ideal for unwinding after a day of exertion.
CHATTJACK 31
In October, paddlers take on this grueling 31-mile race from Ross’s Landing in downtown Chattanooga through the Tennessee River Gorge to Nickajack Lake. Open to canoes, kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, and rowboats, it demands serious endurance amid some of the nation's most picturesque river scenery.
STUMP JUMP 50K/15K
For a brutal trail race, join the Rock/Creek Stump Jump in fall. The 50K course spans Signal Mountain and Walden Ridge with over 6,000 feet of elevation gain and breathtaking Tennessee River Gorge views. A shorter 15K option runs from Edwards Point to Mushroom Rock Loop.
LULA LAKE FIVE POINTS 50
A Southeast standout, the Lula Lake Five Points 50 challenges mountain bikers with 50 miles starting at Lula Lake Land Trust and traversing Lookout Mountain's technical trails and steep climbs. A new 25-mile route offers a more accessible alternative.
IRONMAN CHATTANOOGA
Athletes train rigorously for the September IRONMAN Chattanooga: a 2.4-mile Tennessee River swim, 112-mile bike, and 26.2-mile run. The IRONMAN 70.3 arrives in May with half distances but equal intensity. This year, Chattanooga hosts the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championships.
LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN 50-MILER
Starting atop Lookout Mountain at Covenant College, this trail run explores Chattanooga National Military Park, crosses five creeks, and offers stunning city vistas. Options include 50-mile, 21-mile, 10K, or 5K distances for all skill levels.
TRIPLE CROWN BOULDERING SERIES
Leveraging Chattanooga's world-class climbing, this second-leg Southeast series event at Stone Fort Bouldering spans three days with competitions, a film fest, and pint night.
3 STATE 3 MOUNTAIN BIKE RIDE
In May, cyclists join the Chattanooga Bicycle Club for this epic ride across three states and mountains: 100-mile century, 64-mile metric, or flat 25-mile Tennessee loop—showcasing why Chattanooga is a road cycling hotspot.
CHATTANOOGA MARATHONS
Two elite 26.2-mile races: Seven Bridges Marathon in October and Chattanooga Marathon in March, winding through neighborhoods, riverfronts, and iconic bridges.
SWIM THE SUCK
This premier 10-mile ultra-swim in October navigates the Tennessee River Gorge under English Channel rules—no wetsuits. The downtown start is a spectacle even for spectators.
