Discover the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum: Chattanooga's Premier Historic Train Experience
When people hear “Chattanooga,” many immediately think of railroads, thanks to the iconic song Chattanooga Choo Choo. Glenn Miller’s Orchestra popularized this spirited, gold-record hit 75 years ago.
Just 20 years later, a dedicated group of Chattanoogans formed the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum (TVRM) in 1961 to preserve the region’s fading rail heritage. As passenger services declined and steam locomotives vanished, TVRM committed to restoring and operating historic equipment. Today, “the rest is history”—literally.
Conveniently located near Chattanooga Airport, TVRM is a quick drive from downtown via I-24E, I-75N, and Highway 153N (Jersey Pike exit). Unlike static museums, TVRM offers moving exhibits. Explore locomotives (steam and diesel-electric), passenger coaches, Pullman cars, and more— but the star attraction is a real rail ride. Imagine boarding at Grand Junction Station as the vintage Missionary Ridge Local train whistles to life, journeying into the past.
The rails clack rhythmically as the train crosses bridges and threads through the pre-Civil War Missionary Ridge Tunnel—tracks laid 160 years ago by the East Tennessee, Virginia & Georgia Railway. This vital freight and passenger line became part of Southern Railway, decommissioned around 1950 for a modern bypass. TVRM volunteers revived it in 1968, launching tourist excursions soon after.
History unfolds as the train emerges in East Chattanooga. Disembark to watch a 150-ton locomotive pivot 180 degrees on a 1916 turntable, powered by a modest electric motor—a mesmerizing sight.
Guides then escort visitors to the restoration shop for an insightful presentation on maintaining and fully restoring railcars. Return to the train for the journey back to Grand Junction, reliving everyday American travel from bygone eras. It’s an immersive, hands-on history lesson your family will love.
The Missionary Ridge Local is TVRM’s signature ride, running frequently. Enhance your visit with Dinner on the Diner Saturdays, extended Chickamauga Turn or Summerville Steam Special trips to Northwest Georgia, and seasonal events like spring Bunny Trains, September’s Tennessee Valley Railfest, October’s Halloween Eerie Express, and holiday North Pole Limited excursions.
In May, Thomas the Tank Engine returns for the Day Out With Thomas festival—marking 20 years in Chattanooga, with Percy joining for the first time. TVRM also offers summer camps, birthday parties, group visits, charters, and custom events. Don’t miss the Hiwassee River Rail Adventure from Etowah, Tennessee, featuring a stunning 360-degree corkscrew loop through the gorge.
A Chattanooga trademark, TVRM delivers authentic rail history. Plan your train adventure today. Find schedules, tickets, and details here. All aboard!
