7 Essential Chattanooga Adventures Recommended by Local Tourism Experts
When exploring Chattanooga, seasoned travelers often follow a key principle: "Do as the locals do." This approach offers the most authentic experience of a destination. While iconic attractions like the Tennessee Aquarium and Incline Railway are must-visits, Chattanooga also boasts hidden gems and everyday favorites known to residents. Discover 7 can't-miss adventures curated by Chattanooga Tourism professionals who live and work here.
Family-Friendly Hiking at Indian Rockhouse
Chattanooga is a premier trail destination, with about 50 trailheads within 30 minutes of downtown. Michelle Lawson, Chattanooga Tourism Operations Director, recommends family-accessible hikes for an immersive experience.
"I take friends and family to Indian Rockhouse in Prentice Cooper State Forest," she shares. "It's ideal for beginners or novices—easy and not overly strenuous. At just 30 minutes, it's perfect for multi-generational groups. Adults manage the steps while kids explore ahead, and it's highly dog-friendly."
For more adventure, Lawson suggests extending along the well-marked trail to the right for a 6.2-mile round trip to the historic overlook at Snoopers Rock.
Trail-to-Tavern: Hike to Sunset Rock and Savor Local Eats
Combine hiking with post-trail rewards in Chattanooga's trail-to-tavern tradition. Jessica Hagerman, Chattanooga Tourism Digital Marketing Specialist, highlights a top pairing.
"I always take visitors to Sunset Rock," she says. "Hike up Lookout Mountain from the Nature Center in Lookout Valley for stunning views that capture Chattanooga living. End with Pizza Bros on the Northshore or Tremont Tavern's acclaimed Pimento Burger."
