Fantasy of Lights Boat Parade: Tempe's Iconic Holiday Tradition (Cancelled 2020)
NOTE: This event was cancelled for December 2020.
The holiday season in Tempe is renowned for creating lasting memories and cherished traditions that ignite festive spirit. Visitors to Tempe always leave with hearts full of holiday magic.
One of Tempe's most beloved annual events was the Fantasy of Lights Boat Parade at Tempe Town Lake, typically held on the second Saturday of December at 6 p.m. This standout metro Phoenix holiday attraction featured about 50 boats brilliantly decorated with twinkling lights and festive ornaments parading past crowds along the shore. The lake transformed into a glowing wonderland, accompanied by holiday tunes broadcast from the boats, inspiring spectators to join in the singing. Launched in 1999, the parade grew in popularity each year. The viewing area opened at 5 p.m., with the procession starting around 6 p.m. Admission was free, with a VIP boat-viewing option available for $15, including a meal and hot chocolate. VIP tickets could be purchased online.
The evening kicked off with Tempe South Rotary illuminating sidewalks and paths at Tempe Beach Park with over a thousand luminarias. Children could meet Santa Claus to share their wish lists—don't forget your camera for those perfect photos with the jolly elf!
Following the parade, a stunning fireworks display capped off the night. Before or after, explore Downtown Tempe for dining, drinks, or desserts at favorites like Pedal Haus Brewery, Culinary Dropout, or House of Tricks. Mill Avenue's festively lit trees added extra charm to this iconic street.
