Holiday lights evoke a deep sense of nostalgia. As a child, my family would drive in our green Suburban each December, watching the city glow. My mother even set up our own tree on Halloween to start the season early. Those memories have become a cherished tradition that I continue with my own family today. Below are Dallas’s most celebrated holiday light displays.

NOTEWORTHY NEIGHBORHOODS

From childhood family drives to present-day visits, neighborhood displays remain a favorite. Even as residential decorations grow more elaborate, there’s a timeless charm in a homeowner’s carefully hung string of lights.

Highland Park

Highland Park is one of Dallas’s most upscale neighborhoods, offering a spectrum from professionally curated mansions to gingerbread‑style homes that seem almost edible. Begin at the intersection of Armstrong Parkway and Preston Road, then meander through a captivating light tour. A local family’s home features six oversized jack‑in‑the‑box ornaments, each modeled after the homeowner’s relatives. Don’t miss the Highland Park Village shopping center, where every tree is wrapped from trunk to tip.

Swiss Avenue

East Dallas’s Swiss Avenue transforms into a festive playground for children and adults alike. In 2016, actress Adele even trick‑or‑treated there in a Jim Carrey disguise. This street showcases turn‑of‑the‑century elegance, reminiscent of “It’s A Wonderful Life,” and offers a nostalgic holiday atmosphere.

Kessler Park

South of Downtown, the Kessler Park neighborhood in Oak Cliff hosts a volunteer‑led lighting event each year. Five large illuminated trees line the intersection of Colorado Boulevard and Lausanne Avenue, creating a stunning backdrop against the Dallas skyline.

TALL, TALL TREES

No holiday tour is complete without a towering centerpiece. The Galleria Dallas boasts a 95‑foot indoor Christmas tree, the tallest of its kind worldwide. Its majesty is amplified when viewed from the mall’s signature ice rink.

Klyde Warren Park in Downtown features a brilliant tree adorned with multicolored lights and crowned with a massive starburst. A few blocks south, the Omni Dallas Hotel presents several lacquered red ball ornaments—each 10 feet in diameter and weighing 1,200 pounds—lifted onto the lawn by crane each year.

WALK‑THROUGH WINTER WONDERLANDS

Dallas Arboretum’s “Holiday at the Arboretum” presents the spectacular “12 Days of Christmas” outdoor exhibit. Twelve 25‑foot Victorian‑style gazebos depict scenes from the classic carol, while a 50‑foot musical Christmas tree showcases over 40,000 lights. The event also hosts a Christmas Village featuring local musicians and artists, Santa visits, and special treats. Reserve tickets now for this cherished Dallas tradition.

DRIVE‑THRU EXPERIENCES

While neighborhood displays hold a special place, many families relish the immersive lighting shows of larger venues. The Dallas Zoo transforms into a winter wonderland with over one million twinkling lights—known as Dallas Zoo Lights. Drive through silk‑covered lanterns shaped like beloved animals and enjoy a synchronized light show set to popular music, which you can tune into on your car’s radio.
