Discover State Bicycle Co.: Tempe's Innovative Bike Pioneers

Mehdi Farsi understands the deep personal connection people form with their bicycles—a blend of childhood nostalgia, pride of ownership, and pure joy. This insight drives him and his brother Reza, who founded State Bicycle Co. in Tempe, Arizona, over a decade ago.

The brothers' passion for cycling began with watching the Tour de France and riding for fun and commuting while studying at Arizona State University. After graduating in 2007 with degrees in marketing and management, they launched a furniture import business. Yet, cycling remained a hobby.

As fixed-gear bikes surged in popularity, they noticed friends converting vintage steel-framed bicycles into single-speed "fixies." Seeking their own, they discovered a gap: no one offered complete, new fixed-gear bikes commercially.

Inspired, Mehdi sourced, sampled, and tested components to create affordable yet distinctive bikes. "Locking up a bike on a college campus that's identical to others detracts from the ownership experience," he notes.

Believing a bike's quality lies in its parts, they partnered with third-party suppliers. Two years later, they invested everything in their first order: 140 bikes in seven colors. "We didn't even have a company name—just great-looking bikes," Mehdi recalls.

They prioritized affordability and variety, starting sales online and around Tempe with family and friends' support. Within two years, State Bicycle Co. became a full-time venture.

Today, over a decade on, they sell more than 10,000 bikes annually through nearly 300 independent shops worldwide and online. From their Tempe warehouse—with a European distribution center—they operate Rideshop, their only company store at 922 E. Apache Blvd. It features classics like The Core fixed-gear and new off-road models like The Klunker.

Tempe's urban vibe, public transit, and flat terrain suit their employees, many commuting by bike. "Our single-speed bikes are perfect for Tempe's riding—no steep hills," Mehdi says.

From college night rides to family outings along neighborhoods, canals, and Tempe Town Lake, their passion endures. "Our goal is to introduce cycling—as sport, hobby, or commute—to as many people as possible," Mehdi explains.
