Pig Beach Bahamas: Swimming with Pigs on the Iconic Exumas Island

While Fyre Festival attendees try to forget the disaster, the recent twin documentaries have revived every awkward moment. Amid the chaos, the Bahamian swimming pigs emerged as the undisputed stars. Even without watching, you've likely seen these charming swine in promo videos with influencers like Bella Hadid and Alessandra Ambrosio. They've also appeared in Bachelor, Kardashian, and Pitbull & Ke$ha features.

Fueled by Fyre buzz and Chinese New Year (Year of the Pig), travelers are flocking to this spot—figuratively speaking. Legends claim pirates left them on the island to satisfy post-plunder bacon cravings, but as CNN reports, locals likely relocated them from nearby land for tourism.

The result: Big Major Cay, 82 miles southeast of Nassau, home solely to these swimming pigs. Dubbed Pig Island or Pig Beach, it's a Bahamas must-see.

Visit via resort excursion (as I did) or an island-hopping boat tour that includes iguana habitats and nurse shark spots.

#SwimmingWithPigs posts capture the vibe, but reality is raw: these feral pigs aren't cuddly, the beach doubles as their bathroom, and they'll headbutt for food.

Feed responsibly—only fresh, healthy foods in the water to avoid sand ingestion. Skip beer; tourist mishaps have killed pigs, prompting potential regulations. Follow volunteer guidelines.

Still, swimming with pigs is a unforgettable, shareable adventure—perfect for your next Bella or Bachelor encounter.

  • Discover the Cyclades: Beyond the Postcard View

When you travel, expectation and reality can be two very different things.  My first trip to the Cyclades was filled with enormous expectations...one of quiet, golden sandy beaches, sea water in every shade of blue and food so divine, it was as if Zeus himself was in the kitchen!  And, the reality?  The Cyclades have been everything I have expected and more.  So much so, I have returned the following two summers, after that first trip, to explore more of this magical archipelago in the Aegean.
