Essential Packing Guide for Travel Photographers: Josh Haroldson's Expert Tips
With 11 years of marriage, my wife Stasia no longer bats an eye when I pack more bags than she does for a weekend getaway. Photographers rarely travel light, but when flying, balancing weight, portability, and functionality is crucial. As an experienced travel photographer, I've refined my packing list to ensure I'm ready for stunning shots without the excess baggage.
Extra Lens Caps
Protecting your lenses is paramount for any photographer. I've lost my share to cliffs and trails on adventures, so I always pack 1-2 spares to safeguard against mishaps.
Batteries
With video shooting on the rise, extra batteries are non-negotiable. I pack double what I expect to use daily—at least six if I anticipate three—to keep spares charging at the hotel, ensuring uninterrupted shooting.
Memory Cards
Even in accessible locations, card failure or full storage can derail your trip. I carry at least four high-capacity cards to stay in the field without worry.
Portable Tripod
The Joby GorillaPod is a game-changer: it grips railings securely and fits neatly in my backpack, enabling stable shots anywhere.
Camera Bag Inserts
These modular inserts protect gear while fitting any backpack, messenger bag, or even a purse—versatile protection for on-the-go photographers.
Air Blower and Microfiber Cloths
A dirty lens or sensor ruins shots fast. My rocket blower and microfiber cloths keep dust at bay; a quick daily clean ensures spot-free vacation photos.
Extra Lens
Stick to two lenses max for efficiency. On my recent beach trip, a 50mm f/1.8 portrait lens and a 16-55mm wide-angle covered portraits, interiors, and landscapes without excess weight.
Laptop and External Hard Drive (optional)
Optional but invaluable: back up to a drive and cloud immediately. I've lost cards before—now I prioritize backups to protect my work.
Snacks and Water
Treat yourself like a toddler: pack ample snacks and water to combat hunger and dehydration. A fueled photographer spots more photo ops.
