Mauritius' Top Surfing Spots: Le Morne's One Eye and Tamarin Bay Guide

Renowned for its pristine peach-sand beaches and crystal-clear waters, Mauritius is a tropical paradise. While many visitors flock to the calm northern and eastern lagoons for relaxation, the island's rugged southwestern shores offer world-class surfing opportunities in wind-swept deeper waters.

Mauritius Top Surfing Spots: Le Morne s One Eye and Tamarin Bay Guide

Mauritius' premier surfing areas hide along the southwestern coast beneath the dramatic Morne Brabant, a 556m iconic rock formation resembling a hammerhead shark peninsula, visible across the island. Legend tells of escaped slaves who made their final stand atop this 'morne' (French for 'mournful one'), leaping from the cliffs to evade capture.

Shadowed by Le Morne, One Eye is the island's ultimate surf spot—named for a small 'eye' hole in the rock visible from the perfect takeoff point. Expert instructors at Ion Club, based near Indian Resort, offer one-hour private lessons (2,800 MUR) to guide you there. Beginners should start at the nearby Kite Lagoon on the peninsula's west side, popular with kitesurfers. For kiteboarding, try Son of Kite or Yoaneye Kite Centre, affiliated with the International Kiteboarding Organization.

A laid-back surf vibe thrives further north at Tamarin Beach in Black River. Locals cherish this unspoiled cove and its retro Tamarin Hotel, a 1970s throwback and surfer hangout.

Once among the world's best waves, Tamarin Bay suits beginners today due to shifting winds. Surf from 8-9am for optimal conditions before kiosks open. Lessons available at Tamarin Hotel (600 MUR per hour).

Where to Stay

Beyond resorts, surf enthusiasts find authentic options. In La Gaulette, between Le Morne and Tamarin, Ropsen offers quality sea-view apartments with stunning vistas.

Experience Mauritian hospitality at Les Lataniers Bleus, a charming chambres d'hôtes near Tamarin. Its cozy rooms across three beachside orchard houses include thoughtful touches like a tree-trunk power outlet for checking tides.

How to Get There

Air Mauritius flies to London, Perth, Paris, Mumbai, and more. Direct services also from British Airways, Emirates, South African Airways, and Air Austral.
