Orlando City Soccer Marks Groundbreaking of New Downtown Stadium
Get a preview of Orlando City Soccer’s new stadium plans.
Orlando’s 2015 MLS expansion club marked the moment every soccer fan dreams of—the groundbreaking of a future stadium.
Last week, the club’s signature purple‑clad supporters turned a standard gameday into a city‑wide celebration, marching from Church Street Station to the downtown site.
Around 3,000 fans, all in purple, joined club owners, players, a drum line, purple smoke bombs and city officials on a half‑mile walk to the planned 19,500‑seat venue.
At the ceremony, Mayor Teresa Jacobs of Orange County highlighted the economic and cultural impact of bringing Major League Soccer to Orlando, adding that the new outdoor stadium would be treasured by fans at home and abroad.
Mayor Buddy Dyer echoed this sentiment, noting that an MLS club is more than a team—it draws international tourists, creates jobs, and uplifts the local economy.
The club will finish its 2015 season at the renovated Florida Citrus Bowl—just a few blocks from the new site—before moving into the new stadium in 2016.
