The Castro Band Shares What Makes Dallas Their Favorite City
VisitDallas is thrilled to showcase live music at the 39th annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade, featuring the Castro Band. Led by former American Idol finalist Jason Castro, the group is eager to deliver a set of songs to a proud hometown audience.
Beyond the parade, VisitDallas is partnering with the band to craft a brand-new track, slated for release at a special launch party later this spring.
We spoke with Jason, Michael, and Jackie Castro about their lifelong passion for music and why Dallas remains their go‑to city.
What do you love most about being born and raised in Dallas?
Jason: Growing up just across the street in Rowlett, I’d often visit Dallas for shopping, entertainment, and live music. After touring the country, nothing compares to returning home. Traveling away and then coming back instills a deep pride in being Dallas‑born.
Before making it big on American Idol, music has always been a part of your life. How has music influenced you from growing up to today?
Jason: Music has been a constant in our home. One of my earliest memories is my dad bringing home Beach Boys and Elvis records, blasting them on the speakers while we sang along. Learning to play became an obsession. Today, I still appreciate how a song can shift a moment or attitude—music is transformative.
What's your favorite Dallas neighborhood and what do you love about it?
Jason: Recently, I’ve been spending time in downtown Dallas. Several blocks pulse with vibrant energy 24/7.
Jackie: Greenville is my go‑to neighborhood. I love its lively atmosphere and the diverse dining options—including gluten‑free spots. HG Supply Co. is my personal favorite.
Where do you go to listen to live music in Dallas?
Jason: The Kessler Theater is my top choice. Its layout, intimate balcony, and superb acoustics make every performance feel personal.
Jackie: I agree—Kessler’s intimate setting and clear sound are unbeatable. I’ve seen acts like Johnny Swim and David Ramirez there, and the experience is always memorable.
Dallas is known for its stellar restaurants. What are your favorite spots for dinner?
Jackie: Kozy Kitchen and True Food Kitchen are top picks.
Jason: With three kids, our go‑to spots are fast‑and‑casual. BBBop Seoul Kitchen on Greenville Ave serves amazing rice bowls perfect for kids. Flower Child is another favorite for its organic, healthy fare.
Let's say you're heading out for an afternoon in Dallas with the kids. Where do you take them?
Jason: We love a day in downtown Dallas—Klyde Warren Park’s splash pads, playground, and food trucks are a hit with the kids, followed by a visit to the Perot Museum.
Spring is a great time to visit Dallas. What are some of your favorite outdoor activities?
Jackie: The Dallas Arboretum is a must‑visit in spring, especially for its themed events.
Jason: The Arboretum offers picnic spots and popular outdoor concerts. Don’t miss a sunny patio at Happiest Hour, one of Dallas’ best views.
What should a first‑time Dallas visitor experience?
Michael: A first‑time visitor should try Five Sixty at Wolfgang Puck’s restaurant, then head to Reunion Tower for its 360‑degree views and unforgettable dining.
What's something about Dallas that would surprise a first-time visitor?
Jason: Dallas is far more modern, diverse, and sophisticated than many assume—only after visiting can people truly appreciate its culture and fun.
