Transform Your Dallas Marathon Experience into a Runcation Adventure
As a new runner, I've found that running can be both rewarding and fun. The concept of a “runcation” – traveling to a new city to run – has captured my imagination. Below are top Dallas marathons that make the perfect destination run.
Dallas Rock N Roll Half Marathon
5k and half marathon in March
The Dallas Rock ’n’ Roll Half Marathon, held each March, winds through iconic neighborhoods—Downtown, Deep Ellum, the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge, and Oak Cliff. With nearly a dozen hotels offering runner discounts, accommodations are hassle‑free. Spring weather provides pleasantly warm temperatures that are ideal for pounding the pavement during the festive atmosphere.
Dallas’s spring festival calendar—including Dallas Blooms and numerous Spring Break events—offers ample opportunities to explore the city before the race or to unwind afterward.
BMW Marathon
Half and full marathons in December
During the holiday season, the BMW Dallas Marathon—held in early December—provides a chance to lace up without clashing with Thanksgiving or Christmas plans. The Omni Dallas Hotel serves as the race’s headquarters and is connected to the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center, home of the Health & Fitness Expo.
With Dallas in holiday mode, the marathon offers a family‑friendly escape. While you run the course, your loved ones can revel in downtown festivities. The race is televised locally, letting supporters cheer from the comfort of their homes.
Allstate Hot Chocolate
15k and 5k runs in February
For a sweet twist on running, the Allstate Hot Chocolate 15 k and 5 k start at Fair Park and traverse East Dallas, Greenville Avenue, and the Santa Fe Trail. After crossing the finish line, participants enjoy a DJ‑backed party featuring a plethora of chocolate treats—finisher mugs of fondue, dippable snacks, and more. A dedicated kids’ zone keeps younger runners engaged.
Fair Park is a hub of activity; consult its event calendar for concurrent happenings on race weekend. The African American Museum lies within the park, and Deep Ellum is just a short bike ride away.
Trinity Levee Run
Fun run, 5k 10k and half marathon in late winter
For a scenic challenge, the Trinity Levee Run—offered in late winter—features a route across the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge (traffic halted during the event) and into the Trinity River Greenbelt. The race is part of the larger “All Out Trinity” celebration, which includes a market, yoga sessions on the bridge, and dance lessons for post‑run recreation.
Located near Trinity Groves, the race offers easy access to culinary delights: from Sushi Bayashi’s Japanese fare to Off Site Kitchen’s gourmet burgers. After the run, satisfy your sweet tooth at Cake Bar or Kate Weiser Chocolate.
