Celebrate Juneteenth in Dallas: 6 Inspiring Ways to Honor Freedom

June 19 marks the anniversary of the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States. In Dallas, communities are coming together to honor this pivotal moment with a series of free, family‑friendly events that celebrate African‑American heritage, culture, and resilience.

1. Experience African culture, art, and music at the Juneteenth Celebration on the Ronald Kirk Bridge on June 15. Activities include live performances, art and craft workshops, and bounce houses for children. The first 600 guests receive complimentary food, and the event is free for all attendees.

2. Join a free, family‑friendly Juneteenth Celebration at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center on June 19 from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Participants can receive free health screenings, explore arts and crafts, sample food trucks, and enjoy live entertainment from local artists.

3. Attend a lecture on the History and Celebration of Juneteenth at the Dallas Historical Society on June 19. Donald Payton, president of the African American Genealogy Interest Group, will share insights into Juneteenth’s legacy, followed by a performance from the South Dallas Concert Choir. Admission is free.

4. Listen to live jazz, blues, R&B, and soul at the Muse Juneteenth Jazz Jam on June 21–22. Presented by the Black Academy of Arts and Letters, the event stars jazz artist Martha Burks and promises an unforgettable musical experience.

5. Attend the 34th Annual Hamilton Park Juneteenth Parade and Festival at the Wille B. Johnson Recreation Center on June 22. The parade kicks off at 10 a.m., followed by a festival featuring performances, music, and dance. The event is free and family‑friendly.

6. Be inspired at the Juneteenth Jubilee at the J. Erik Jonsson Central Library on June 22. Celebrate with music, dance, and a special guest lecture by Dr. Deborah Plant, editor of Barracoon: The Story of the Last Black Cargo. The library also hosts Juneteenth film screenings every Wednesday throughout the month. All events are free.
