Riverfront Jazz Festival 2024: Dallas' Premier Labor Day Celebration

Labor Day weekend in Dallas consistently transforms the city into a vibrant hub of music, style, and community celebration. This year, the Riverfront Jazz Festival—now in its 42nd edition—returns as the highlight of Dallas’ Labor Day festivities.

Hosted by the Black Academy of Arts and Letters (TBAAL) and presented by VisitDallas, the festival draws over 12,000 visitors from across the United States each year. The event showcases a blend of classic jazz, contemporary soul, and Latin‑influenced rhythms that reflect Dallas’s diverse cultural tapestry.

Founded in 2017 by Curtis King, TBAAL grew out of the legacy of the original Black Academy of Arts and Letters (BAAL), established in New York in 1969. With a modest $250 seed fund in 1977, King expanded the organization into what it is today—a platform that nurtures Black artists and promotes inclusive artistic expression.

Why Dallas’ music scene was a natural fit for TBAAL

“Dallas has evolved from a business hub to a cultural destination,” King explains. “The city’s growing demand for diverse entertainment—especially among the Black community—has made it an ideal place for TBAAL’s mission to thrive.”

Highlights of the 2024 lineup

  • Eddie Henderson & Nnenna Freelon – straight‑ahead jazz legends
  • Will Downing – smooth jazz icon
  • Tito Puente Jr. & Hiroshima – Latin‑flavored dynamite
  • Erykah Badu – Dallas native and neo‑soul pioneer
  • Jennifer Holiday – the original Dreamgirl, closing with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra

What sets this festival apart is its multi‑genre approach and its commitment to community. The “Promising Young Artist” stage, featuring 20‑minute sets from TBAAL’s summer program participants, runs from 3 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Saturday. These young musicians not only perform but also tour other stages to absorb inspiration from professional artists.

In addition to the main stages, local musicians host after‑party performances at venues such as Magnolia Dallas Downtown and The Statler Hotel, further amplifying Dallas‑area talent.

Why attendees will leave with more than just great music

“Music is therapy,” King says. “We aim to give people a sense of joy and belonging that stays with them long after the final note.”
