Dallas Art Month Returns: Four Weeks of Exhibitions, Performances, and Lectures

With more Texans vaccinated every day, Dallas is stepping back into a vibrant cultural scene. The city’s annual Dallas Art Month—originally Dallas Art Week in 2013—now spans four dynamic weeks of exhibitions, performances, and lectures. Whether you’re a seasoned art lover or just beginning to explore, this year’s program offers both in‑person and virtual experiences. If attending every event isn’t feasible, here are seven highlights you shouldn’t miss.

Gallery Hop – April 17

Experience a day of discovery at Dallas Gallery Day. Over 20 galleries across the city will open their doors on April 17, celebrating the spring exhibition season and giving patrons a chance to meet artists and curators while enjoying complimentary tacos. Explore the full list of venues and schedule.

Creative Conversation: Arts & Justice – April 26 (Virtual)

The Office of Arts and Culture invites you to a free, virtual panel titled Creative Conversation: Arts & Justice. Panelists—including the CEO of Big Thought, a Dallas County criminal district attorney, and the program director of Junior Players—will discuss how the pandemic, economic downturn, and social‑justice movements have shaped communities of color in 2020 and explore creative pathways toward equitable community building.

Changing Perspectives Block Party – April 16 (Dallas Arts District)

Enjoy a socially‑distanced outdoor performance at Annette Strauss Square. The block party showcases ten Dallas companies, such as Anita N. Martinez Ballet Folklorico, Dallas Opera, and Dallas Black Theatre. RSVP now to secure a spot at this free event.

Frida Kahlo: Five Works – Dallas Museum of Art

From spring through the end of the year, the DMA will exhibit a rare collection of Frida Kahlo’s still‑life paintings, offering a fresh look at her artistic evolution. The show runs concurrently with Devoted: Art & Spirituality in Mexico & New Mexico, and a virtual tour is available on the museum’s website.

Leap for Jazz Drive‑In Concert – Oak Cliff

Following last year’s success, the Office of Arts and Culture returns the Leap for Jazz Drive‑In Concert. Free jazz ensembles from the Community Artist Programs will perform in the afternoon. Due to limited capacity, register early to reserve your spot.

Theater on the Lawn – April 25 (Strauss Square)

Gather lawn chairs and blankets for a family‑friendly afternoon of community theater. The free Theater on the Lawn event will feature local groups performing plays and skits. Social‑distancing measures are in effect; pre‑registration is required.

Community Artist Showcase – Fair Park (3 days)

Celebrate multidisciplinary art at Fair Park’s Community Artist Showcase. The three‑day event highlights dance, music, spoken word, and more. Admission is free but requires ticket reservation.
