What does “Love Local” mean to you?

"When you support local, you support your community. And if you don’t support the community, you won’t have one." —Brandon Sippel, Co-owner, TKB Bakery & Deli

Brandon Sippel vividly recalls the day TKB Bakery & Deli—co-owned with his siblings Nathan and Melina—was named Yelp's No. 1 restaurant in America. Business quadrupled overnight, attracting national media like Good Morning America, Telemundo, and local news outlets. “Our whole life changed,” he shares.

Founded in 1991 by selling their mother's cookie dough door-to-door, the Sippel family expanded to their Indio industrial park location, serving oversized sandwiches to locals and I-10 travelers ever since.

From cold and hot sandwiches, salads, sides, and sweets, TKB elevates everyday deli fare. A single bite of their smoked pastrami or house-baked bread converts newcomers to lifelong fans.

“It’s the best bread you’ve ever had,” Sippel enthuses. “High traffic ensures no day-old buns—everything stays fresh daily.”

Sippel's favorite, the Chicken Chipotle, blends red chili chicken, pepper jack cheese, chipotle sauce, and classic toppings on jalapeño focaccia. It was a top seller until dethroned by The Trump Card—not named for the former president.

“A regular started with turkey, bacon, and avocado,” he recounts. “Each visit, he added more, even tossing in his chips, saying, ‘Bro, throw my chips in.’ I joked, ‘Dude, you keep trumping it!’”

About half their customers zip by on I-10, but a devoted base hails from the community where the siblings grew up. During the pandemic, TKB fed essential workers, National Guard, and FIND Food Bank staff. Sippel promoted struggling businesses by wearing their apparel during lunch rushes.

“The key to our success is giving,” he says. “Every sandwich includes a free cookie. Kids get free shirts or hats—our hand is always extended.”

I love bagels.  Toasted whole wheat bagels with melted butter and strawberry jam, or marmalade, depending upon my mood.  Bagels with cream cheese, smoked salmon, tomatoes and onions, or just a plain cranberry orange bagel, and the list goes on. When we lived in Ballard, I used to buy my dozen while grocery shopping at the Ballard Market.  After moving to Downtown Seattle, I was on the hunt to find my next dozen.  I landed at Market Bagels at 1525-1st Ave,  at the Pike Place Market which was
