Discover Stunning Outdoor Public Art in Greater Palm Springs: Murals, Sculptures & Tours
Greater Palm Springs is a vibrant hub for visual arts, extending beyond museums and galleries into the great outdoors. While art fairs flourish during peak season, free public art installations are accessible year-round. Thanks to 'Art in Public Places' programs across every city in the valley, visitors can enjoy self-guided tours, detailed maps, and a diverse array of murals, mosaics, fountains, and sculptures. Self-drive art tours offer an immersive way to experience this dynamic aspect of Greater Palm Springs' cultural scene.
In the east valley's City of Coachella, the 'Coachella Walls' initiative launched in April 2014. The inaugural mural, a poignant portrait of a farmworker by acclaimed Los Angeles artist El Mac, graces the side of a downtown Pueblo Viejo building. Nearby, 'Casa de Trabajador' by Armando Lerma and Carlos Ramirez, founders of Coachella Walls, captivates viewers. Be sure to explore the multiple murals opposite Dateland Park.

Indio's public art program, complete with an interactive map, honors the cultural heritage of the valley's oldest city through nine dramatic murals from the Historic Mural Project (map available). A standout is 'History of Water in the Coachella Valley' by Don Gray—a massive 140-foot-long, 15-foot-high masterpiece. New sculptures and installations are added regularly, including the inspiring Teen Center Sculpture by renowned local artist Philip K. Smith.
Public art holds equal importance in La Quinta as its famed annual Arts Festival. Follow the self-guided walking tour using the public art map around the Civic Center Campus, City Hall, Library, and park. Highlights include the poignant 9/11 memorial 'Never Forget,' featuring steel from the World Trade Center, designed by a local artist and funded by a Boy Scout's community fundraising efforts.
The first city in Riverside County to enact a public art ordinance, Palm Desert boasts over 150 public artworks citywide, including rotating installations along the median of the bustling El Paseo Shopping District.
Civic Center Park houses more than 20 artworks, from the surprising 'Fisherman' embedded in the lagoon's bank to the deeply moving 'Holocaust Memorial' by Dee Clements. Nearby, the Palm Springs Art Museum in Palm Desert offers free access to the Faye Sarkowsky Sculpture Garden year-round, just off Highway 111. This four-acre oasis features winding walkways amid palm trees, desert plants, water features, and rock formations, dotted with 10 major sculptural works.
In Rancho Mirage along Highway 111, the shaded 'Cancer Survivors Park' showcases tiled benches, a pyramid kiosk, waterfall, and life-size sculptures depicting cancer survivors and their families—one of only 22 such parks nationwide. The Rancho Mirage Public Library hosts ongoing exhibitions by local artists and photographers.

Renowned local artists Karen and Tony Barone craft large-scale, colorful animal sculptures visible throughout the valley, including at the Palm Springs Animal Shelter, Historical Society of Palm Desert, University of California Riverside/Palm Desert Campus, and Rancho Mirage Library and Observatory.

At the Cathedral City Civic Center, discover several artworks, including the enchanting 'Fountain of Life' crafted from artisan-carved Mexican stone. Artist Jennifer Johnson meticulously applied hand-cut mosaic tiles and glass, revealing animals, birds, and flowers upon closer inspection. Nearby stands a statue of actor and musician Buddy Rogers, the fountain's first donor.

Palm Springs' public art collection includes 60 works scattered throughout the city. Iconic highlights are the beloved seated statues of Lucille Ball and Sonny Bono downtown. In the Uptown Design District, David Morris' 'Rainmaker' water feature delights with its tipping waterspouts. Art abounds at Palm Springs International Airport, the Convention Center, parks, and downtown streets.
